clogged charcoal cannister

Hi everyone, im new to this forum. I did a search and was unable to come up with any specifics, so I will ask the question here. Sorry if repetative.

I own a 2000 corolla.
Recently, I had problems filling up with gas. It only takes about 1/2 gallon at a time. I had the same problem last year. They said that the fuel line was obstructed. This time, I had a clogged charcoal cannister.

My question is, what are some common causes of a charcoal cannister to get clogged?

And, how can this be prevented?

This is the second year in a row, and I dont want this to be an annual tradition.

that's weird.. heh on a 2k corolla none the less.. in my older '89 corolla deal.. I'm just gonna chuck the fucking thing.. no use for it.
