If you go with a completely programmable EFI system you can get 50MPG high-way out of a highly modified 4AGE.

Id say it would have to be the 4AFE as the 4AF couldnt be as efficient

Well, you'd be surprised at how much you can pull out of a carb in the way of efficiency. But since carbs lack the computer control, which makes EFI superior for economy.. It's a trade off.. for a ton of power and high RPMs I'd go carbs any day over EFI.. it wouldn't be a cheap carb setup though.. I would dump a lot of money into it and have a sort of computer controlled setup. Things about carbs is there is no restrictions. One thing I like about carbs is the fact that you can drop the peddle and scream.. There is no computer limitations or worrying if things like your fuel pump can keep up.. or your injectors.. etc. Each technology has it's trade off and ultimately it all comes down to how much cash, patience, determination and people connections you have.

PuNiSh3R,
I believe that you have converted your 4age from EFI to a carb driven, didnt you have a problem with idling and low speeds?

as for power and fuel efficient balance i'd say 1zzfe, 2zzge or 1nzfe (echo engine but good for corolla since those rollas in japan uses the 1.5L)

No.. I've always had a 4AF... I don't have anymore of the emissions controls which did things like electrical load idle up.. or cold start idle up.. etc.. What I do have tho is for cold starts the choke on the carb.. I have a selenoid (trunk release motor) which is connected to a switch in the cabin.. hit the switch before I start the car.. this energizes the selenoid n that pulls the choke lever.. start the car.. the choke runs the engine rich.. which causes it to idle up to warm up.. then hit the button again.. turn the selenoid off and that releases the choke.
For elec. idle up.. I really don't have an issue.. set idle speed at like 1100.. and when I shift into gear it idles around 900ish.. and turn on lights.. heater blower full way.. etc etc.. and the idle only drops like a 100rpm.. I'm gonna figure out a way to setup some type of idle up I think.. it's just not easy.

For a stock engine that came in a Corolla the older 4a-fe and the newer 1zz-fe both get about 40MPG on the highway.
Of course the 1zz has 20more HP to boot so it is definitly the most fuel efficient Corolla motor. I get 39mpg even with my Cold Air intake and high speeds on the highway and partial city driving on a tank...
