fuel economy

We have a 1996 Corolla and I was getting lower and lower miles per gallon after I dropped in a K & N air filter. ( I keep a log book on all of our 3 cars ( 96 , 91 Corollas & a 88 Volvo 740 wagon ). This way I can look back on what I did or what is coming up for maintenance. To get to the point, I removed the K & N air filter and dropped in a OEM Toyota air filter and my gas mileage went back up to 22 in the city and 36 on the highways. With the K & N air filter I was getting 15.1 MPG city and 19.3 on the highways. The K & N did give more power, no dought, but it was just killing my gas mileage. I am into fuel economy first and performance second. I Learned the hard and costly way not to screw around with Toyota engineering even a little if I want to keep it in perfect running condition. My Corolla was running fine and I got cought up in the hipe of K & N air filters ( To much tv for me). Thanks for reading about my economy problem, Dan.

Dan, there is no way the K&N reduced your gas mileage by that much. If anything, it should have helped your gas mileage.

I'm 98% sure that what happened was you were driving the car a lot harder to feel that little extra kick, it was probably due to your driving style in other words. If you get on it hard from a stop in town then your gas mileage will suffer.

For instance I put a full Cold Air Intake in my 2001 Corolla and I get almost the exact same gas mileage. (as long as I take it easy on the throttle )
I just got back from a trip with it on and two people in the car and a trunk full of stuff and still got 37mpg...

Fuel economy

Hi: I am just reporting my findings . With more air being sucked into the intake the more fuel the engine will use because of the computer making the nessisary changes to match the air to fuel ratio via all the sensors. Otherwise your engine would run far to lean causing a power lose not any gain and thats how the K & N air filters are promoted anyway, more power. They say nothing about better fuel economy. Anyway , thanks for your thoughts on the matter, Dan. PS. I am totally disabled now , but I am still a engineer of main propultion power plants ,both steam and internal combustion engines. Soon we will writing about larger capacitors, comintaters and brush sets, No more auto polution. That will be a nice change for the better, Dan.

I'm fully aware of how an internal combustion engine functions.
As you know, another way to get more air into the engine is to push the gas pedal down harder.
You seemed confused by the economy loss, and so am I considering my full cold air intake with K&N cone filter has caused me a loss of 1mpg if that, and a 5HP gain. This is with hard driving. I also keep a log book of exactly how much fuel I use.
As far as I know, experiencing a loss of 16mpg from an air filter is almost impossible. If you were really using that much more air and burning that much more fuel, you would have gained at least 20+ Horsepower to lose 16mpg. You Corolla would have been a rocket.

Maybe the difference was from a differrent driver, maybe you drove faster on the highway, maybe you had some unrelated mechanical problem, but anyway, as long as your car is doing good now, I guess it doesn't make a difference to you, just know that that is not normal.
Chris

Fuel economy

Yes my Corolla did run like a rocket , thats for sure. I did race some models on the road and won all of them when I had the K & N air filter in there. They were the high priced cars I could never afford or want to buy even if I had the money. K & N air filters do add horsepower, no question about that. Now it run as it did when I bought it new in 96 with its 3 speed auto trans and am getting the great gas mileage I was getting before I put in the K & N air filter. But even after I was done proving to myself that my Corolla was very much faster with the K&N I went back and drove it normally as I always have, not pussing it in less I had to, and now when I do push it when I have to it just doesn't give me that increadable power it use to. So now I will stick to my OEM Toyota air filter and enjoy the fuel economy I want and need for now. I might, one day, put the K&N back in just for fun because I love the speed my Corolla is fully capable of. Thanks, Dan.
