87 Corrolla Backfiring?

I recently purchased a 87 Corolla with a 4A motor carbed. The problem I am having is that every time I press the accelerator down or when costing down hill ,I will hear a poping sound from the front of the car and then it will travel out the exhaust.

It sounds like a mild case of backfiring but is very annoying. I recently gave it a full tune up with valve adjustment, plugs ect. I was thinking maybe something was up with the carb, but dont really want to tackle that because of my little experiance with them.

Any suggestions on what I should check next ?

Thanks

Burnt valves?!! Nooooo............ Would an intake leak cause this?
Also, is it worth putting a remanufactured head on this car? The car has a total of 99,000 on it.

backfiring is usually caused by misfire (incorrect timing) or carbon buildup

even overheating can do it, but that's for air cooled engines mostly
