Broken Mounting Bolt on Fan Belt Tensioner

My folks have a 2000 Toyota Corolla with just under 37k. The mounting bolt for the fan belt tensioner broke, leaving a chunk of it in the engine block. They bought an extended warranty on the car at the dealership, but this was unforunately not covered. Fortunately, my mechanic was able to get it out after lifting out the engine. He said that this was an odd failure, but he has cars come in with a variety of goofy problems all the time.

Has anyone else had this happen?

Is there a way to tell by looking at the bolt if it was defective or not?

Thanks

That is totally crazy!

So they just got the extended power-train warranty I assume. And the full-cover warranty ran out at 35k?

The bolt must have been defective, or improperly installed.

They have the full extended warranty, but a bolt is apparently not covered. I called my dealership and my mechanic called Toyota's 800 number.

That's total BS. That car is basically brand-new for a Corolla and that Dealker should cover what is obviously a manufacturer defect. You guys need to me much more proactive with the dealer if you want good service.
