HELP! 6000 rpm at 60mph?!? Shaking on the highway?
I was on the highway tonight and got my 1992 Toyota Corolla up to about 60mph when all heck broke loose! The tachometer went up to 6000rpm and the engine wouldn't stop revving so fast until I slowed to 45-50mph (the tach went to about 3300rpm then).
It was real disturbing and the whole car was shaking/vibrating. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know what might cause this?
Please help, I'm very worried about my corolla which has otherwise been so good to me.
hmmm... is it standard?? the 6000 rpm thing could just be your clutch is not engaging properly anymore, so it slips at high revs, making the motor rev even higher. You might need a new clutch.
Please don't tell me that! I'm very poor after paying college tuition and my rent.
What else could it be? The car is an automatic if that makes a difference. What should I check (ATFluid, oil, coolant, ???)?
I need this car to go into Oakland where I tutor middle school children and mentor a smaller group of teenage girls so that they will go to college. I appreciate any help you can offer, and I really appreciate the very fast reply, thanks!
I had a friend check the ATF and while it was not running it seemed fine, but when it was running and at "opperating temperature" (how hot is that?) it was quite a bit LOW on ATF he said.
Which kind of AFT would you use to top of the stuff currently in there?
Could that cause it to slip out of gear? Or could it be something else? How hard it changing the ATF fluid and filter (and how often should that be done, like every 50,000 miles?)?

The Tranny Fluid should be measured with the car warmed up, but after it has settled for a couple of minutes. Top it off to the top of the warm section. Use Dextron III Automatic Transmission Fluid. Low tranny fluid could cause it to slip out of gear yes...
I am not sure on the frequency of changing out the tranny fluid. If your car has under 75,000 miles it shouldn't need it. Changing the fluid is a bit more involved than say changing the oil, but it can be done by an arm chair mechanic.
Aren't you supposed to chk ATF fluid with the engine running? I thought the procedure was to slowly go through PRND21 and back to P again, then chk the fluid while the engine is still on?

It was checked whil the engine was running (the temp gauge got up to about half way (pointing to 3:00)). He moved the shifter around for a few minutes (through all the gears many times, including park, reverse, neutral, and all the drive dears) after it was warmed up and still running.
He checked the oil with the car running too. When the car was not running I looked at the ATF marker and it was just barely below the bottom marker for "hot" checking. It went down after the car warmed up, but I guess it doesn't matter where it was when I checked it with the car off, right?
My friend added about a third of a bottle of "lucas transmission stop leak/slip fix" which is supposed to work very well. It was the same consistency and color as the current ATF (red and syrup-like). The car seems to drive a little bit better now (doesn't just into gears, but maybe I'm just imagining the difference). Now when the car is "hot" and running which the ATF is checked the fluid comes up to the bottom of the "Hot" marking area on the ATF dipstick. Before it was about 1cm below. Should I put more Lucas ATF addative in? It says it also "restores" old fluid, can't hurt I guess
I wouldn't add too much of an additive, especially if you've already got 3 in there. When your revs jumped to 6000, was the car accellerating or just cruising along at the same speed?

Cruising along as the same speed, no acceleration.
As for the addative, I don't have three bottles in it only one third of a single bottle (e.g. less than half, more than one quarter). It says to add the whole bottle for best results, but so far it's helped. I'm driving to work today and I'll check if the problem recures at highway speeds (60+), cross your fingers, okay?
well i had the same kind of problem with my moms and i checked the ATF fluid and everything and it ran good for a bit but then all of a sudden it happend around highways speeds and it wouldnt get out of 2nd (automatic) so i brought it in the shop and took the tranny out to have a buddy of mine at a tranny shop look at it and it ended up being the main drum in the tranny and it had snapped ( i really dont know how the hell it kept driving) but it ended up with my mom getting a new tranny... hope this isnt whats wrong with yours.. best of luck
