Hi everyone! I’m new to this forum, but have owned Toyota vehicles (Celica, Supra, 4Runner, Lex SC400, and now a Corolla) for over 20 years.
My teenage daughter was driving her 2000 Corolla today on the freeway when suddenly is begun to lose power. No matter how much she depressed the accelerator, the speed would not increase. She was able to get off the highway where the car soon stalled. After receiving the phone call for help, I’m thinking it is the catalytic converter.
When I arrived to check out the car, I found that it would turn over and seem to start, but within a few seconds, the engine died. I had it towed home and begun diagnosing it. I reset the ECU, checked the throttle body; but still did the same thing.
Thinking that one of the cats might be blocked, I removed the front oxygen sensor and started the engine. It ran!

I was able to run up the rpms with no problem (except the loud noise). I reinstalled the O2 sensor and re-started the engine. Crap, it now starts….and it ran fine for 10 minutes

(until I turned it off). I drove it around the neighborhood and everything seems normal.
What happened to make the vehicle start running again? Could I have bumped something back into position while trying to get the O2 sensor out. It did take about 15 minutes to get out. The car runs great and has 43K on it.
Have you seen this problem before? Your thoughts please!
Thanks
John
