Something is deathly wrong with my 4AGZE

I was driving home today after getting some 94 gas when all of a sudden, the mofo starts knocking really loud! I'm like I don't believe this, it's broken!

I had a similar problem with my DA integra, but that turned out only to be a loose plug.

So I'm praying that maybe it will only be a plug. Removed the IC and checked the plugs. Shoot, plugs look good.

Next I check the gears, and it looks like the exhaust cam jumped a cog. Maybe the belt is old and worn, and got loose over time?

My question is, why the hell was it knocking loudly? I thought that 4AGs were non-interference engines?

Could the mis-detonation be pushing the valves the wrong way?

I'm totally not sure what kind of damage one cog would do.

But I do know that I'm severely pissed now, because I was really looking forward to driving it this summer.

Thanks for the help,
Eric

my 4age timing belt came loose once before and it does knock like a mofo...could be that the pulley-ish thing on the belt tensioner came loose-which is what happened to me.

either that or check for broken spark plugs...yes, they've broken on me before. but a large sign that points to a broken plug is the smell of unburnt gas...if u dont smell that then it's definately ur belt.

just simply line up the cam gears to the markings on the plate and let us know the news.

-edit-

i didnt realise that ur cam gear is only off by 1 cog..that's not causing the prob then. i too had my cam gear off the proper timing once and the motor just had no power and sounded super loud at higher rpm's. i didnt get any knocking.

What kind of knock.

In sync with one cylinder or something more or less repetative?

In any case I would do a compression & leakdown test. To make sure a piston isn't broken.

I'm thinking you'll end up pulling the oil pan and replacing some con rod big end bearing and bolts.

Just a guess though.
