Question about 4AF and 5AF

I have a 88 coupe, engine died. Needs to be replaced. the engine place doesn't have a 4AF, but they said 5AF will fit.
I don't eally mind the power. this car is just to get around.
So how does this work? I use the same car, same manifolds... eveything the same, but use a 5AF long black? doesn't seem right to me.
Could somebody tell me how this should be done? or should I stick to a 4AF?

Thanks!

You could go with a 7AFE.. and switch over from all that bullshit carb vacuum hunk of shit the 4AF is.. DOn't get me wrong.. I loved my 4AF.. but I couldn't stand how every-fucking-thing was vacuum controlled with the stock carb.. it made doing custom stuff pretty hard. My 4AF is on it's way out.. I mean one or more cylinders is shot.. still pulls pretty good tho.. surprisingly.. I get the most horrible gas mileage possible.. probably 14mpg right now..

So I just bought a 7AFE today and I'm very happy with it.. I like the way it looks over all.. just a better engine if u ask me.. It will be a lot easier to setup my quad carbies on this then it was my 4AF.. since any EFI engine has electronicly controlled timing advance.. which was a problem witht he 4AF.. I had no ported vacuum with my sidedrafts to work the timing advance on the dizzy.. blah blah.. I don't know much about the 5AF.. But if I was you.. and this vehicle is just to get around.. I'd make a jump over to a fuel injected engine.. won't cost you that much.. I paid 400 for my engine, 45 for the ECU, 75 for the wiring harness plus 6% sales tax.. total of like 551USD I think.

I have an '89 sr5 coupe.. For you to go to EFI all you would need to do is drop the tank.. put in a GT-S tank with the fuel pump.. and maybe need to lay some new fuel lines.. not an issue total of like 200 bux max plus the engine.. THis 7AFE I got is from a '96 corolla.. 79K miles on it.. it's in great shape.. oil smells good.. looks good.. etc

just for caution you should pull the oil pan and clean it out..... (to punisher)

the 5a-fe is a downgrade and you'll have to deal with emissions issues... but if you just use the longblock (and strip it down to just motor and head) then swap over you'll be fine for it running

The thing is, how big of a emission issue? Did those two engine share the same manifolds, carb and ECU setup?

well... if he used the 5a-fe exhaust and intake manifolds then he would be using the japanese parts.... and in japan there are no emissions..... so that's a problem....

i'm not using any emissions on my car... but i'm pretty sure (if i had to... where i live i don't have tests) i would still pass though... but it *could* cause problems....
