Does the engine sounds as if its not compressing anything? Is the starting rpm much faster than normal?

no, it sounds normal besides the starting up part. haha. it ran fine before the belt. i also pulled the head because i thought for sure the valves would be bent but they were fine.

it's not the starter. it does give codes for the VSS and intake temp. the Haynes book i have doesn't tell how to test them or even where the VSS is. Does anybody know? it's my girlfriends car so i don't know how long these codes have been showing.

I have a similiar problem

My problem is that the timing is off.... some how the belt lost its tension and now the timing is off bad. I have a 92 corolla dx. Can so one please tell me how to get this thing back on. Read in the
manual about getting pistion #1 at TDC... but that is very hard to
do without any professional tools. What I have been doing was
using a straighted coat hanger and making hashs marks on it to
try the find the highest hash mark on the compression stroke. Thought that I had done that... but still not working.

^ you can make your #1 cylinder TDC with out proffesional tool....but i hope you have basic tool kits.

the problem with hard to start could be anything...can be any of these:
-fuel pump
-ignition system
-distributer in worng position.
-spark plugs
-starter
-low batteryvoltage/amp

could be anything.
