corolla oil pressure

The oil light on my '91 corolla comes on after the engine warms up. If I rev the engine it shuts off, but only until another rpm is reached. Recommendations? Could it be the sending unit? Or is the oil pump dying? Car has 162K right now.

Runs great--still chirps 2nd gear and does not overheat.

BTT.... I too am curious to see what kind of responses this thread gets! Also let me add a question for the more experienced people to answer....

Question: the oil light does that come on only if the oil pressure is too low.... or does it come on only when its too high... or both...?

If the answer to my question happens to be "only when it's too low" then I would have to say that your pump might be going out. But I don't really know... so again that is why I am BTT'ing the thread, because I am curious to see what other TN members say about it.

Only when too low, could be that the sensor is broken or the pump. However, you shouldnt rev the engine if the light goes on, you might screw everything up.

the oil light on my 89 corolla has been coming on for over 5 years when i bought it in '99 i noticed occasionally after driving it for a while the oil light would flicker and come on at idle in drive i told the previous owner(my bossand orig. owner) about it and he said it had been doing that since it was a couple years old. he took it to the dealer and they said it was "normal" and pointed it out to him in the owners manual it says it's normal to flicker and come on but should go off again when you accelerate.

the car has 215,000 miles on it now with no engine work ever except for a timing belt/waterpump change so i wouldnt worry about it unless its always on or you hear noises

The oil light comes on when first starting the car as a bulb check, then only if oil prssure drops below 4lbs, thats very low. You need to have it checked with a mechanical, external gauge, if pressures good try a sender, if not new oil pump time. The light should NEVER flicker after start up!!
