I don't know the exact size but I put 205/55/16 on my 2000 and it is fine except for when I turn the wheel all the way to the left or right it scraps on the inside of the wheel well. There is a plastic part were the upper wheel well meets the lower wheel well. It sounds horriable but it only happens if I am not paying attention backing into a parking spot or pulling out of a parking spot.

i know a LOT of corolla people who go for 17's...personally, the ride is nicer on 16's and there's less rubbing.

as far as fender rub goes...you CAN roll your(rear) fenders...there's a DIY here: http://vamp.darkravers.net/DIYRollingFenders.cfm

I plan on lowering the car 1.3 inches. I am hoping to not have to roll the fenders simply because I am going to have to pay someone to do this there is no way I will try it.

I went with 55's as it only put my odometer out by .6kmh at 100kmh. 45 may drop you enough to increase it significantly. I found a really good website were you can put the orginal tire and then put in the new tire and it tells you the differences. I will have to find it and post it.

pureimport - that might be because your tire is smaller then the stock tires the manufacture put on your car. Use this link http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html to see the speed difference between actual and what your odometer is reading.
