finding gas leak
Today as I had my Corolla (89 with the 4-AF engine) on jackstands to start the process of replacing a transmission seal, I noticed the smell of gas, which I noticed to be coming from the back of the gas tank. I felt around, and felt it was wet up on top of the tank, so I assumed that the leakage was originating from that area (the tank was almost empty btw). I proceeded to drop the tank, hoping that i could cure my abysmal gas mileage, and now with it out of the car I am unable to replicate the leak. It was a steady drip when the car was at an angle, and I have smelled gas sporadically soon after filling up while driving the car, the car itself getting somewhere between 20-25 mpg on mostly open road. I'm extroadinarily confused at this point, I was hoping it was somthing simple like a gasket around where the fuel gage sender thing or the fuel pickup or vent(?) thing was, but no such luck. Any help would be appreciated
