Starting problem

Hello all,
I have a 1992 Corolla, 4AFE engine, I am having an intermittent problem, where it won't start on the first crank, what happens is, i turn the key and i get no reponse, no engine turning, no starter clicking, nothing. Then i wait a minute and try again and it starts right up. Anyone have any ideas? I think it might be the soleniod or a bad ground. Also, does anyone know where the starter is located? I think its under the exhaust manifold, but i haven't had a chance to get under there yet.

Ok, sounds *exactly* like the problem that I've just fixed. I started a thread with almost exactly the same question (includes photos of my repair).

It turned out to be (majorly) worn starter contacts. With a little searching I came upon this article:

I did the job myself, it took me about 3 hours and it cost me less that $10 (new contacts).

Paul.

My '93 had this problem about a year ago. I simply removed the starter, cleaned up the connections, cleaned up the battery connections, and reinstalled it. Haven't had a hiccup from it since. My problem crept up over about a month, until finally it wouldn't start, no matter how many times I tried. I drove it for a week that way, just making sure to park where I could roll the car forward to start it... couldn't find time to fix it... God bless 5-speeds.
