Jim,
If you feel good about doing your own work... I would try to do these things yourself. If you don't feel comfortable then that is understandable. I myself am NO mechanic... however, by purchasing as well as READING my Chiltons and Haynes manuals... both in good detail cover all these maintenance items you are in need of having done.... Also I have done all the above on my 92 Corolla without too much problem... As far as honest mechanic.... I have two answers to that question: 1- there is no honest mechanic. 2- assuming that you are an honest person, then YOU would be the only honest mechanic.... sometimes its better to do things yourself... Reason why I did those items mentioned above is because my local Toyota dealer wanted to charge me hundreds of dollars just to change the water pump.... they claimed that it was very extensive process... they claimed that they would have to remove the timing belt to access the water pump and because they were removing the timing belt they might go ahead and replace that too.... than that added a few hundred more.... I put them in their place and told them that I was not dependant on them.... I was merely evaluating the cost of them doing it and determining if I can justify paying them because I am too lazy to do it myself.... when they told me a boldface lie about removing the timing belt, I explained to them that that was an absolute lie, I called them a bunch of crooks and then reported them to my local better business organization.
Water pump is challenging but not too difficult.... timing belt can be risky.... you need to know how to re-set the timing if you cause it to be off... if you can do that confidently then I would do it myself.
