huge thuds

the last few time I've driven my Corolla GT-S it has been making huge and loud thuds comming from my back end. This does not happen all the time. It happens some times during acceloration or turning.

My room mate suggested that my U-joint is busted. Does these synthoms sound like a busted U-join? And how can I check if it is broken? How serious is a broken U-joint?

The wheels are in just fine. Pushing down on the car the struts seem fine as well.

I took her out again with out the radio and I dind't get that noise. I drover her easy and hard but it didn't do it again... But there was however a pinging/ratteling coming from the back of the car on the drivers side.

I'll have to jack the car up and have a look at it in day light tomorrow.

I'm hoping the noise was just the broken spoiler slapping the car but I doubt it.

check the shock bushings and other bushings that take load under hard acceleration... it could be your rear end swooshing around like a loose... well you know.

I don't see the connection between your radio and the sound? lol

i had the same loud thud sound when i had my car. i thought it was more of a drivetrain problem. it happened more when i shifted though. driveshaft maybe? just an idea. good luck!

I jacked the car up and had a look at the suspension and everything is intact.

I checked the driveshaft in nutral and it had about a half inch of play ether way. Is this normal or does this mean my U joint is busted?

yup, u joints are gone, there should be no play.

roll in reverse (idle speed) and the get into first gear, drop the clutch (still idle speed) and let it come near stalling and if you hear the bang you can be sure its your u joints rather than your bushings.
