Question 84 FWD Radator cooing fan not functioning

1984 Toyota Corolla LE.

Just bought the car it has 188,000 miles and is very clean. Everything functions but the cooling fans. I have checked the fuses and the breakers, they seen to be in good working order. Any Ideas?

Car quickly over heats in standing traffic.

Please advise

I have a recent similar problem with my '91 Corolla. I have changed the thermostat, coolant temperature switch, and temperature relay and the cooling fan still doesn't come on. The water pump was changed about a year ago. I think I have an electrical short somewhere and figuring out its exact location will take more work.

What I ended up doing was wire the cooling fan directly to my headlights, so that the fan would come on when I turn on my headlights. Of course, this would be fine during the day, but at night, the cooling fan would be on all the time. I am still trying to figure out the problem.

Wildbill.. change your thermostat.. my car used to do that and my fans didn't come on. I think the fans are setup to come on once a while to get rid of the extra hot air, and to cool down the rad.. not to cool down the engine. If the motor overheats fast its usually a sign of the thermostat being shot, another sign of the thermostat being shot is if you get absolutely NO heat coming out of your heater.

Wait, I'm not sure if that model has an engine fan (radiator fan--mechanical) and/or an auxiliary fan (condenser fan--electrical). If it's the main engine fan that's not cooling, you need a new fan clutch.

If it's the condenser fan (plastic usually, electric) then it might just be a bad fan (motor or switch). Why not try changing the fan itself and see if new one works. If it does, it was the fan. If it still doesn't work, it's something else.

Goodluck!
