Hello
Intake, header, exhaust!!
That's preety much the starting point for more accel.
After that try cam gears and power pullies.
Put a breater on the pcv system.
Maybe cap off the vacume line for the egr system. (that ones up to you being egr doesn't operate a WOT anyways)
As allways reduce weight!!
It's free!!
Just takes some tools and your time.
My 2 cents.
C-YA!!

Cam timing gears wont really do anything, especially if this is a 4A-F/7A-F engine.

Hello
Sorry to say but they allow you to tune the power band.
Even the fe's benifit from cam tuning.
Your motors power out put and where the power is produced is dependent upon your cams and how and when they open. Right?
Well, you put the intake on, the header, the exhaust. Now your engine well be making more power on top (at least the potental) your fe's cam timing is set up for low -end torque but now your headers and exhaust are to big and you lose the low end back pressure + slowing down the exhaust due to the larger volume and less thermal efficency.
If you advance the timing on a single pulley then more power will be on top but it lacks the fine tuneablity of the ge's thats about the only draw back on the fe's head design.
That and the angle the the valves allow air into the engine is a little too steep.
Sorry for any miss spellings but no time to go back and fix them!!
Gotta get back to work. C-YA!!

NO, you got it all wrong. You tune the timing with the distributor cap... if you adjust the single timing gear, what will happen with the intake side of the engine? (since the gear is on the exhaust cam). You'll mess the dialing on that side up... ONLY way to tune the cams on an F-head engine is to remove them and re-position them in relation to one another.

Hello Flashman
By advancing the cam gear you will advance the cam timing of both intake and exhaust.
Which will provide more top end power.
It's not to much diffrent than puting a cam gear on a sohc engine.
I know plenty of people out there that have cam gears and how they work.
Your ignition timing (Dist.)is governed by the cams but that's also a seperate device which is also adj.
Put a cam gear on and advance 3-4 degrees then set your timing buy the Dist.
That's how it's done on both DOHC and SOHC engines.
Your 4a-fe in theory is a SOHC engine it just happens to have 16 valves.(which is a good thing)
Just try it you'll be happy!!
Well, gotta get back to it.
C-YA!!

Heh, man this is starting to be a big arguement! Well, the adjustment is VERY crude. But a 4A-F being a sohc, no WAY, it's a dohc and can be adjusted like one, no offence but since you can sdjust the exhaust and intake cams separately (needs more work than on a 4A-G) it still adheres to dohc rules, not Sohc ones.

Hey Flashman
I am not trying to argue.
You are correct about having the ablity to adj. both cams but since the intake is deppendent of the exhaust it still can be adj. like a SOHC.
My statement was in theory (only in Adj. wise).
I drove my 4afe for 250,000 miles before the 4ag so I know alittle about both.
If you want to try and match up teeth go for it but, a good cam gear will get you where you want to get also.
Not as much fine tuning alowable in the cam gear but, it's much easier than yanking the valve covers and trying to get it where you want it.
Dyno tuning would be a B*tch that way also being it's 100 bucks an hour around here.
Well, gotta go man.
Talk to ya later! C-YA!!

No offence, but for a 4A-F I think that the cam gear is a waste of money  well ok, if you want to go for looks, sure, but performance gain is and will be debatable.

20Vsleeper is right. Don't spend too much money on bolt-ons for the 4AF because they don't give you much more gains. There is someone in Ottawa that has a 4AF turbo, but I'm not sure how much he spent. Trust me, save your money for a little while and go for the big hp. Before I had the GZE, I had a modded 4AF with header, exhaust, intake, advanced timing, plugs/wires, blah blah blah and it was still a 17.5 s car.

And now with the GZE it can run about 15s flat with about half on crappy street tires that won't grip!
