Similiar problem as Zieglermaria with the Matrix- Gas mileage on 99 Corolla was 33/39 mpg when I first got it with 17K. Now 29/33 and under and has been like this thru last summer. Car runs great... changed a/filter, plugs, gas brand & octane, emptied trunk, inj cleaner, new tires, pressure and alignment, mech says unlikely it could be EGR at 50K and the drop actually began around 30K.
Emmission insp next month so I'll get a printout which I think will tell if 02 sensors are ok... will it?.
Seems silly to complain about getting 31 MPG average (and if you mention that to a "Big 3" owner they can get damned right nasty and sarcastic!) but I really didn't buy this car for its style!
Just Two quick questions-
(#1) - Is it reasonable to expect 40+ on the hwy with an LE automatic? ... or is that just my imagination.
(#1 1/2) - Saw on a different forum where inlet housing was dirty, cleaning helped! Anyone ever had that problem before.
(#1 3/4) - If pvc shakes and rattles is it okay?
(#2) - Anyone got any other ideas of simple things that could cause this drop?. ... I know I should have it hooked up, but my mechanic is actually one of those guys that drives an Expedition and thinks I'm just being a little snot bothering about this. Could be right,... Anyway... back to question #1- can some of you tell me the best mpg you can get on the highway with this mod/year?
Sticker says 29 ave ... but I know its better than that.
Thanks-
Ted
#1) more like 36-38 Maybe 40 with a stick and grandma driving.
My 2001 (slightly different because I have VVT-i and a stick) has gotten an all time best of 39mpg on the highway. With a life-time average of about 33mpg over 50,000 miles....
These are a few questions I thought I'd ask. In my relatively short time dealing with my own cars, I've learned the importance of never overlooking the obvious, so bear with me if the questions seem a bit trivial or stupid.
First off, how much have you been running the air conditioner? Remember, pushing that button automatically deducts about 5 mpg. The air conditioner is on when you turn the front defogger on, too.
Secondly, how much of that time has been spent with the overdrive disabled (O/D OFF button)? This can also really ruin gas mileage.
My '93 1.8 5-speed saloon has averaged 29.8 mpg over the last 22,100 miles (a little over a year and a half), so you're not in bad shape given that the car is a less efficient automatic, and it weighs more. My worst has been 16.9 mpg over about 19 miles (just straight to work and back for a few days before I filled up to leave on a trip), and 42.2 mpg over a 260 mile trip. I usually get about 21-22 mpg around town with the A/C going the whole time, 25-26 around town with no freeway driving, around 30 with some freeway, 36-38 on the highway with no A/C, and 31-33 on the highway with A/C on.

We're all looking for something.... Something to be...
"First off, how much have you been running the air conditioner? Remember, pushing that button automatically deducts about 5 mpg. The air conditioner is on when you turn the front defogger on, too."
This is an overt exaggeration. I have got 38mpg on the highway before in 80degreesF with the A/C on and 80mph speeds.
"36-38 on the highway with no A/C, and 31-33 on the highway with A/C on."
That's crazy man, I religiously write in my gas log and that has never happened to me, do you run it at full blast the whole way or what?
Thanks Chris and Red...
No its not the a/c...I even use "vent" with the fan off for defrosting right now while I'm playing with this MPG number.
Just for giggles I'm going to take out what seems to be a still relatively clean Fram air filter and put in a Toyota orig- but dont expect that to really matter. Then change the PCV... small stuff I can do myself. This problem is really more psychological than economical. It was hard to accept after all these years that "made in The USA" sucks when it comes to cars. But, this little Corolla is the most economical, dependable and comfortable car I've ever had. Not as much FUN as the '64 Chev... but that took 3 engines and about 5 trannies to get 178K before it was junk. Now my wife just sold the Pontiac and bought a Sienna.
Who woulda thunk! Anyway, I'm posting because I know the car DID get just about 40 before and there must be something that isn't exactly right now. Its fun trying to find out why and its a lot more enjoyable to trouble shoot using other people's experience... rather than changing every sensor I can find.
I've been in another forum before but a noob here. Chris, you do a great job... but I think you could use a haircut!
Thanks
Ted
You know my gas mileage fluctuates a lot. Sometimes it goes in the shitter for a week then comes back up. I wouldn't worry about it unless it continues over like 5 tanks.
BTW the Sienna is a bad-ass van with that 240HP 3.3 liter V6 Empty they run a BIT faster through the 1/4 mile than a Corolla
Umm holy crap, how the heck are you guys getting that good of gas mileage??? I know CA has strict SMOG requirements which drops the gas mileage, but i see some of you are in CA too. Toyota lists the EPA / Gas Mileage Avg. as 29/32. How are any of you getting up to 40mpg??? I finally got mine to 30mpg on average with mixed driving, but damn, I would have to drive like a granny to get better than that. So yeah if there is some magical trick you guys do to your car to make it not eat so much gas, please lemme know!
something to think about, 99 plugs are 100,000 mile plugs. also, they have to be replaced with what came out, the 2 electrode plugs. my fathers 98 he tried the platnum 4's and lost alot. plugs make a huge difference on these engines, and even more difference on the vvt 1zz

Switching to platinum on an 01+ makes no sense since they come with irridium plugs, whcih are "better" than platinum.
