90 corolla=every time i try to start this car i must turn it over once for a couple of seconds, then to off position, then back to start and it starts right up. anyone got an idea what,s happening? jim.
^^^ good to see another Triniman on here *bonx* there r a good few other guys here that are familiar with Trinis...welcome to TN
back to james' prob
sound like the engine isn't holding compression after being switched off.
there are 2 ways to detect the simple vacuum leaks...
Start ur car and poke around with piece of hose (one end to poke, the other end in ur ear) and listen out for leaks.
Use soap water on hoses and manifold/header gaskets and look out for bubbles forming as the air leaks out.
well, with in the first 4-5 cranks your compression will be at it's max.. so that isn't the issue. Sounds like a good safety feature if you ask me... lol
Since it's a '90 I bet it has the 4AFE in it.. Do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn the key over to the ON position just before you crank the engine?
Hey, do this.. Pull your spark plugs out.. put them back on the wires.. and then set them on top of the valve cover.. have someone crank it and see if you see a spark on all the plugs.. that will tell you if it's an ignition problem or a fuel problem.
Check make sure it isn't a ground issue.. make sure all the ground wires are in good shape.. I know that for some weird reason, after I did a bunch of mods to my engine I was toasting this one ground wire.. body to intake manifold.. when I would crank the fuckin wire would just start to smoke and melt the insulation on it! Then if I'd stop cranking n try to star tthe car right back up again.. I'd hold the key over to START for a few seconds before anything would even happen, until that ground wire cooled enough I guess.
good advices !!! i got the same problem with my 1990 toyota sedan with a 4afe engine,i think it might be a comppresion problem, try checkin the comppresion on each cylinder.[IMG]vba0135[0].gif [/IMG]
its most likely power draw and plugs, might be fuel filter. change plugs, wires, and fuel filter if you haven't done so in a while. also check your distro cap for cracks, if there are, you might has issues with cold starts (mornings) do you have hte prob in the morning, afternoon, night, or all the time? also, dont hold the start too long or else you melt your wiring, i learned that the hard way. also, you have to look at your battery too, is it fairly new or is it kinda old and shady? i used a costco (yeah yuckk) battery for a while, and it didn't do me very good. switching to a rockford fosgate deep cycle made my own ignition problems go away. also, before you crank al lthe way to start, try hitting your gas pedal a few times at the "ON" position. good luck finding your problem!
i had that problem, but it turned otu that my fuel line was leaking....like ggushig out, to the fuel line was under presure till i crank till it build up pressure.....so anything with ignition/fuel problem

Doesn't the 4AFE have a cold start injector (valve) like the 3SFE?
That's a common problem with the 87-91 Camrys...
If the valve is dirty or not functioning, it could pose a problem when attempting to start the car...
