OK, here it goes...
The car:
I own this car
It is a 1991 Japanese import Corolla. I believe that body style is of the 7th generation ('93-98 in North America). It is a 2.0 litre diesel.
The problem:
There is an issue with the steering that came to light when the car started making clicking noises from the left wheel area as I accelerated while turning right. At first I thought it was just a loose wheel well cowling rubbing against the wheel as I turned. So I removed the wheel and this is what I found:

As indicated, there is a small amount of play in the rod that I assume is the steering rod. I checked all the other connectors and rubber boots, and they seem fine, actually better than expected. I trimmed a piece of the loose cowling (no improvement). The only other piece of information I have is that there is uneven wear on the outside edge of the tire.
So I'm wondering, is it just a case of the car needing a front end allignment? Is the play in the steering rod normal? Or is there potentially a problem with the steering rack (*dread*)? Or could it be something else?
Would the enlightened care to comment?
Paul.
