I had one for many years and it always brings a gleam to my eye on the rare day I see a nice one zooming by. Twas a pretty racy car even stock, and for its day.
but it's a little harder coz it didn't come out here in Canada but i had my eyes on one from a friend. we'll see! 6-speed blacktop is a nice swap on those things...
Yea, and make sure to get the GTS version. It has a way nicer interior, nice monochromatic body paint with ground effects and mini wing. I could be wrong, I forget, but the regular FX16 might not have as nice a suspension. The FX16 with its black bumpers, etc. just looks like a by-now junked FX....dont even see those on the road any more. OTOH, could make for a great sleeper (well, not with rims, ec). But I just think they look ugly.
These cars have a lot of space inside; a lot more than an mr2...
I remember that it was the car that was going kill the VW GTI…that didn’t quite happen. The FX lasted only 3 model years. It was a swing and a miss for Toyota.
True, Ive never driven a GTi, though my brother is a VW enthusiast and general car nut. I had a Flomaster exhaust and bigger piping to add a little more power and growl. Having the redline of 7500RPM was fun , though the real power didnt kick in until 3700-4000+. Didnt have enough low end torque
Beleive it or not, a little birdy once took it up to 135mph on a flat freeway. (That is way too fast to be driving on the FWY, and way too fast for this class of compact car IMO.

the "blacktop" 20V 4A-GE came out only in Japan from the Corolla Levin/Trueno Later Models with a 6 speed transmission.

yeah, this particular car has the side skirts, spoiler, 4 wheel disc brakes, and the interior is nice with bucket seats.
Oooohhh...a 20V.....nice. Not familiar with the Levin/Trueno though.
I remember seeing some pictures in Road and Track about a much re-engineered FX16 replacement for Japan, etc. that never came out here, it was quite handsome.
Its nice that nowadays the tech used in the old MR2/FX16GTS has been improved and made as standard in the economy toyota cars. I went to the dealer for some mainatanance the other day and the prices were not too bad...like around $13.5 you could get 1.6-2.0L 16V and a roomy interior.
I actually got my Dec 86' mfg. date FX16GTS from an enterprise rent a car sales lot with 27K miles on it in the summer of 1988. I saved a lot of money, in that it would have cost $13.5 +tax new, and I got mine with 27K miles on it for $7500 + tax + extra warranty. It lasted until 2000, whereupon I got a 91' V6 camry which is still serving me, though not as much fun factor obvisouly.
the monochrome GTS ground effects and interior really bumped up the looks on the FX from ugly and pudgy budget black- bumpered thingamaloid --> mr. cool
got my hands on one for $75 running nicely...someone had it, didn't want to replace the clutch, so it sat forever. was rather low miles, too...i swapped in a new clutch and sold it off for a good $500.

i don't play well with others.
I've seen a few FX16 sr5's in the toronto area.. not sure if they were bought here or imported from the US.. there's 2 I've seen in my area alone, and a couple I've seen on the 401 in Toronto. No GTS's though.. maybe the SR5's made it up here but not the GTS models. either way they are rare as hell.
