Question 1988 Corolla SR5

Hello,

I need some help. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1988 Corolla SR5. It has had only one owner who has put only 50,000 kilometres (32,000 miles) on it. It is in good condition and fully loaded (sunroof) etc. The dealership wants to sell it to me for $6,495 (Canadian) + taxes (total being $7500).

I have heard that this car is becoming a collector's car and that parts are becoming hard to find. Seeing only 50KM has been put on it, anything that could go wrong with it still hasn't happened.

Is this a good investment, considering the car is now 16 years old?

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Truthseeker

That's a lot of money for an ae92 no matter what the mileage is. I could be living in my own little world, but I'd think it'd be more in the $3500 - $4000 area? Bah I don't know, my car was probably only on its 10th owner at 50k (ya my car was a skank)

Yea, I think that's way too much, specially considering it's an sr5. It should be more like 4-5k. I don't think the ae92 is a collector's car...

btw, 4-5k for a mint one.

Collector's car?? WTF?? wrong corolla my friend.. wrong model in either case.. the 85-87 Corollas are the ones that are collector's items.. if you wanna call them that.. that dealership must be on crack.

The dealer is just trying to take a shmuck for a ride obviously.. I wouldn't pay more than 1200 for it.. Considering I paid 700 for my car.. private party deal though, no dealership BS.. Anyway.. car was in good condition, only problem is that the sun-roof was rusted to fuck and had a tarp over it.. Didn't discover this till half a year later. Oh well. Um, so yea specially since it's an SR5.. oh and mine only had 90K on it single owner. I got an 89 sr5.. So yea, definitly not worth 7grand.. You could get a fuckin hella newer car for that price. We like our corolla's, but we aren't fuckin stupid.

I'm sure you probably heard that from the schmuck who is trying to sell it to you for almost 8 grand

Do you realize you can get a 1998 Corolla for that price??

50k is low mileage for the age of the car etc...
but considering it's only a SR5, it's not worth it at all

same price for a GTS is still too high...a GTS if NO rust, 50k mileage should only go about 4-5k depending on other factors..

although an AE86 is a collector's car...it's a piece of rusted metal, same goes to an AE92 (i am having one myself, but still, same comment)..sorry if i insulted any of the AE86 Fans...no doubt it's a nice car..but if u want it in decent condition (body, frame, mechanical etc), you would be spending a lot of money...

back then in the 1980s..no one would realize an AE86 would become a collectors car....well..maybe a minor group of people...the price was inflated due to ID...

but let me put it this way..there are always some ID fans who thinks this SR5 is worth it..the dealer could say anything he wants to tlak u into it...i guess if u hafn't asked us here, u might haf bought the car...

the dealer could tell you this thing is a 2nd gen of the AE86, with very low mileage, it could smoke a lot of cars out there...and this car is a collector's item, the price would go up...these are bull shit...

one thing for sure... a 100k GTS in good mechancical condition, considering same driver skills...could smoke this SR5...

if u tell the dealer this word by word...i am sure you would see him a lil bit shocked
