'89 Corolla purchasing questions

Hey there.

My girlfriend saw a car she thought she might be interested. She knew only that it was a "red corolla"

I've called the guy and the word on the car is:
  • 270,000 km
  • needs rear brakes
  • needs battery
  • exhaust is kind of rusty
  • front brakes about 4 months old
  • interior "good", no rips, burns, etc.

Now I can replace the battery and brakes. Exhaust isn't a big deal. From the sounds of it it's merely a touch noisy, not dragging on the street (yet).

So they're asking $600 OBO, and we figure we can probably get it for no more than $500. (Canadian Dollars)

As far as certification & drive clean, let's pretend those aren't hurdles for now. I'm more interested in the car.

With 270,000 on the car is it worth buying. It'll cost a couple hundred bucks to get it on the road (brakes, battery, random exhaust repair).

So what should I be looking for if / when I go to check the car out?

At 270,000 is it pretty close to being on it's last legs?

Any other random pieces of advice?

Thanks!

GT-S or SR5?

Just my thought, I wouldn't touch it.. to many miles. But.. Toyota's are known for triumphantly breaking mileage barriers.. so, give it a fine going overs.. everything.. someone else here can give u advice on what to look for.. and do a compression test on the engine.. see how that looks.

GTS or SR5???

270,000km on its last legs??? oh shit.. mine at 303,700km must be dead then!!!

that many km is nothing really.. if the car hasn't been abused of course.. mine runs just fine, but its all highway driving. Highway driven cars tend to run smoother and cleaner than city driven cars, and usually run higher mileages than city driven cars too.

Toyota's do biatch!!

Remember these guys are talking metric Punisher, 270,000km = 164,000 miles, 303,700km = 185,257 miles

I've seen toyotas with 300,000 miles on the clock.
200,000 miles is pretty standard.
