moldy smell in ac

after a whole winter season, my AC finally has to go back in work as temp. rises. Today is the first day that I turn the cooling system back on and the dirty sock smell blowing from the vents really bothered me. I was ambivalent in choosing the heat or the nasty odor. Does anyone have any hint on how to get rid of that?

i had the same problem with mine for a while. It happens because moisture gets stuck in places, i think the condensor tray, but in not sure. N e way the way i got rid of it was keep the vents always open and everyone and a while running the natrual air (not ac or heat) and basically jsut air the bugger out. The way i saw it was if there was moldy moister the least i could do is air it out and make everthign dry up.

If this doesnt work like it did for me then i know they make a spray or something that u use to dry out the ducts and whatever else.

Get the most non smelling Lysol you can get. They do have a non-scented but it's hard to find. Put your vents on high and fresh air, then spray the Lysol into the intake outside of the car at the top of the hood/bottom of the windshield. Use half to a whole can. Let the fan run for a long time. Do this on a sunny dry day when you do not expect any rain. You have mold and Lysol will kill it. If it keeps coming back you have to figure out what the source of the problem is.

it will come back year after year. Simple...if ur driving with ur windows rlled down...put to max HOT (in temp) and zero fans and open the vents.

To prevent mold, 1-2 minutes before ur shutting down ur car...depress teh a/c switch (meaning no a/c light) and run the car on fans's alone on open vents. This will dry up any condesation in the vents that leads to mold in the first place. I do this regularly..but i still get the smell sometimes...we all do....doing such...just prevents the chances of the smell!
