Air Conditioning Filter

Hey guys-
I just got a 98 Corolla and whenever i turn the A/C on it stinks kinda bad for a few minutes. My friend said to check the filter, but I don't have a manual or anything. Anyone know where it is located.

Also, the person before me smoked, so other than febreeze, are there any other products/tips to help it smell better?

Thanks,
Daniel

Your 98 corolla doesn't have a cabin a/c air filter. The 2003 was the first. You could try some A/C deoderizer for the smell. You spray it in the fresh air vents outside the car.

It'll take some doing but I found a product at my local Autozone that really did the trick for a smokers A/C. Believe the brand was Ozium. Had to remove the panel over the passengers legs to get to the heater thermistor. Couple of screws and I had a small access to the a/c plenum. This stuff came in a pressurized can with a tube so I could spray it directly onto the front of the evaporator coil. It came out like scrubbing bubbles foam. Half went there and the other half went through the vent cowling with the fan on "high". Just follow the directions. It was a pain but it really dissolved the baked on smoke crap. PS-Oh yeah, remove the thong you stuffed in the vent after the new years eve party

This is the stuff, link to JCWhitney's site but I bought it locally. Need the one with the spray hose on it, just follow the instructions. The Ozium works well too but is only a temporary cure. This stuff wipes it out if applied on the evaporator per instructions.

Would this be the same process for a 2000 Corolla CE? My AC smells like mildew at first. I thought I had a filter too. I'm in Canada so can anyone recommend a similar product to spray inside the vent if needed?

I used odor out for my mildew smell which you spray in the outside vents by the windsheild [you can use the fogger also for smoke smell inside the car] and it only works temporarily as the mildew always grows back in the evaporator. toyota's only answer is to let the car run a few minutes before you get in it, there's no way to fix this permanently so we're just stuck with it since they wont make better evaporators that resist that problem.
