Manual shifting an A/T will not make it any faster.
There is more of a difference than gas mileage.
For instance if you look at a dyno graph of a V6 Camry with A/T and one with M/T, the manual one puts about ten more horsepower to the wheels than the auto. This is because the fluid filled box which is the Auto trans has a much higher parasitic drivetrain loss than the Manual trans.
Aditionally if you look at 1/4 mile times that people post for stock or mostly stock cars, for instance the 03+ Corolla, the M/T times are about .5 seconds faster through the 1/4 mile than the A/T times. If we are talking about older corollas, the ones with a 3 speed auto are almost a full second behind the 5-speed manuals in the 1/4 mile.

xrs us model: 170 hp, 127 torque, 2zz 1.8 L

xrs uk model (known as 1.8 VVT-i T-Sport): 192 hp, 180 torque,
2zz-GE 1.8 L
(site: msn.co.uk)

regular rolla us model: 130 hp, 125 torque, 1.8 L
(site: msn.com)

regular rolla asia model: 145 hp, 188 torque, 1.8 L
(site: tai.com.ph/altis.htm)

Clearly, the numbers are Not "pretty much the same."

Is there a way to disconnect that emission control unit/chip?

The first two are a different engine than you have.

the US one is the 1ZZ-FE, and the numbers for the Asian model look like the numbers from the Celica GT (also 1ZZ-FE). None of us know for sure why the GT makes higher numbers than the Corolla, but I'm willing to bet a lot of it would be in the ECU.

the higher number could be on the motor, not on wheel...

that's right ain't nobody said ricer here. you see, corolla is always associated with class. meanwhile the civic will always be associated with rice. that's right they are rice car, not race car.

There's no way in hell any stock 1zz or 2zz is making 180+ lb-ft of Torque. There has to be some conversion mistakes there.
As for why the 1zz in the Celica GT and in the MR2 Spyder makes 140 HP vs the 130 HP in the Corolla, it is because that version has a revised intake manifold/throttle body and exhaust and the ECU is mapped to take advantage of that and make more power.

This thread has wandered far off-topic, so I am closing it.

If aw10134 has any more specific questions on modding his Corolla he is welcome to start another thread.
