98 corolla door won't open--help!!

I have a 98 toyota corolla. The driver's side door handle on the inside will not open. I have to roll the window down and open it from the outside. A mechanic thought that something broke that holds connects the handle to the latch. Sounds like that could be possible. If anybody has had this problem, could you please let me know how to fix it. Sounds like either the metal rod fell off or its broken.. Take off all the interior from the door and try to fix it yourself. If the metal rod just came off, it will save you money.
