I turn the key, sometimes I have to turn it 10, 20, 30 times.........other times I only have to turn it twice, other times it starts RIGHT up on the first try. But it just makes a CLICK.....when I turn the key. Turn back, they try again and CLICK. Each time I turn the key ALL I get is CLICK. Do this a half dozen times or so and then it dires RIGHT up.
I'm thinking a starter? Maybe loose/dirty connections or a totally new one. I don't THINK it's the battery since everything works perfect once it starts up.
Er... easy to determine that you battery is dead or not...
Look at the dashboard display... Battery Sign on when you start means your battery nearly dead... Is could be your key hole problem also...
Starter will give out plenty of noise if it is going to die... I have experience on that before... it is noisier than others...
Try to look at those points 1st...
Cheers

could be the battery as well... if the battery is bad, but it runs fine once it starts going... then that just means your alt is good..... the battery might have a bad cell & not hold a charge
when it won't start, take a hammer & tap the back of the starter with a hammer..... that helps... & if it starts right up... the starter is going out

It's not the battery or it wouldn't "start right up" when it did start.
it sounds like the starter or a switch or relay or connection between the key and starter...
i've had plenty of experience with these...
it's probably your starter or the solenoid inside it.
easiest thing would be to just replace it.
like toyotaspeed90 said, try tapping on the started with
a metal pole or the tire wrench a couple of times
then try to start it, if it does, then it's your starter.
My mom is having this problem with her 91 Cutlass Supreme and we have replaced the starter the battery and the relay and it still does the same thing, We are thinking that there is a wire inbetween the relay and the starter that is grounding out.
to tell you the truth, 75% of the time on toyotas, all you need are the starter contacts. $15 for oem parts and 2-3 hours for the first timer. Alot cheaper than 100's for a new starter
I am having exactly the same problem with a '99 Tacoma right now. It has been going on for about 3 months and is getting progressivly worse. Especially bad on damp or very hot days. Battery is recent and voltage does not drop when key is held after "click". I was suspecting the starter also.
FUNNY i had the same problem in my toyota truck! I was mad cause i couldn,t figure it out. GUESS WHAT IT WAS?? THE BATTERY GROUND WASN'T MAKING A GOOD CONNECTION!so i changed the ground to a fender using a screw that would make good contact and TA-DA! never had that problem again! of course u might have to reground to another location. just some input i really hope this is your problem!
