Keep Blowing fuses.

On my 1988 toyota corolla sedan, i have been having very odd problems with blowing the rear tail light 15a fuse.

The only reason this topic came to my attention was a random stop by the boys in blue stating that my tail lights are not on.

i check the fuse this morning and sure enough its blown. So i change it with another 15A fuse and test it by turning on the lights, and sure enough it blew again.

Now the only reason i think this is happening is because i recently installed a car deck when my car was without for the last 8 monthes. But even then it shouldn't be like this at all.

To top if off, my 12v outlet [cig lighter] fuse is also blown, and my instrument cluster lights have gone out as well.

if any of you have a schematic of the car in question, that would be very greatful, otherwise, your best imput to this situation is muchly appreciated.

Is all of that on the same fuse?
If it is, does it all work properly till you turn on the lights?
Does the radio have a wire to change display at night?

The dash lights and tail lights may be on same circuit. If you pinched the wire in mounting that would explain blowing the fuse when turning on the lights.

this isnt the safe thing but just put in a bigger fuse.

they are different fuses.

the tail lights are a 15 amp and the cig lighter is a 7.5 amp and the dash lights, well the fuse is in tact, but the lights itself do not work.

I have tried a 20 amp just for kicks [tried it very briefly and it still blew.

Now i have to get this repaired within 48 hours otherwise i could risk a 500 dollar fine.. *angry face*

im goin to pull out the deck rightnow and check things out.

You got a short circuit, do not increase the amperage of the fuse or you might have a fire on your hands.

pal i had the EXACT same problem in my '86, the ground you used for your stereo isn't a ground once you turn on the ignition for some reason... i know, queer, very queer.

Ground the stereo to the body instead, will fix all of your problems.

I'm trying to fix my friend's 85 corolla and his symptoms are the same. No tail lights, no dash lights and the tail light fuse blows immediately. I disconnected the harness that runs to the rear with no effect. I assume that you've solved this - what was the problem?

smae fing happened in my mr2 and stuck a wire in place in of a fuse to see if it did anything and turned on my lights and things started to smoke.found that it was my dimmer wire to the headunit gounding and blowing the fuse.

wow this brings back memories....

it was a restult of the stereo headunit..and it was shorting out somewhere along the frame....i beleive from a result of a shorter than normal heat shrink tubing that i used.

anyways, i repaired that and replaced the fuse and everythign works like it should.
