my corolla hasnt been starting lately on the first switch, after i got in an accident (dont know if thatst the cause). Its been on and off acting up when i want to start it up (for about a month)last week morning, it just went dead and all i heard was a click, only after about 20 tries did it start up. after that day it sometimes starts with no problem but most times (especially after not driving for more than 6 hours) it wont start on the first switch. could it be other than the actual starter, like some wiring that can be fixed and if its the starter can i wait and change it later??
If its happening when its really hot and/or after you've been driving the car for a while, then chances are its heatsoak from the manifold. The manifold gets so hot that it causes the starter to malfunction. I have that happen on my car after I drive for a while, and specially on very hot days, the car won't start until the starter is cold enough to crank. Good thing my car is standard and I can push start it.. I couldn't imagine how annoying it would be if my car was automatic.
I went to a toyota dealer, he told me 300for the part alone (starter). REN69, it happens after i dont drive it for a while(its parked overnight). then again today i didnt drive it since yesterday morning and it started after 3 tries. i m just taking a risk and driving it for now until i get some money to change it.

There is a core charge in that price. It should be reduced after you give them the old unit.
the core may not be in there..... when customers come to me (at an auto parts store) i give them the price then tell them there's a "$XXX core on top of that"..... but as i said, most starters are under $200 even for new ones with a lifetime warranty (ie, you break it, you get a new one for free)... the starter is simple enough to replace... try it for yourself

Oh.. so after you DON'T drive it it wont start properly.. but does the starter still crank?? or does it just go click click??
If the starter still cranks but the motor won't start, then its not the starter that's failing, there's something else wrong with your motor. If you hear click everytime you turn the key, then its the starter, I would suggest getting it rebuilt or buying one from a wreckers and keeping your old one as a spare for when it starts happening again, then you can get the old one rebuilt and put it back in.

Same thing used to happen to me. I would leave it overnight and it wouldn't crank. When I left it for 5 minutes, it was fine. There was an audible click when it wouldn't start so I replaced the starter.
take off the starter and put it back in again... i used to have a celica with the same problem... it's just a little loose and doesn't make full contact... when it's warm it makes contact cause it expands... and when you leave it, it cools and loses contact... at least that's how it was with the celica... seems to be a common problem with toyotas... try it... if it works... you save 400...
thanks guys, sorry to reply late.. I checked out the thread and am considering to try that , at least Timmies's idea of taking it out and putting it back again sounds doable even for the mechanically uninclined like myself. then again i might be wrong when i pop the hood and try it.
