Hello, I recently bought an '88 SR5 it's in excellent condition in and out. Red with charcoal interior, for 2500. I really like the car. My question is, are the GTS models rear wheel drive. I thought I read that they are somewhere.
i have a 89 SR5 i think we are now 4 or 5 SR5 owners now on the forum. like andrew said the 88 and up are all fwd except some 4 doors 4wd and station wagon 4wd.Is your engine 4-af or 4-afe?
First of all, it's good to see another SR5 owner join the forum..
Welcome aboard kileak
As the Master of Corollas (Andrew) said: Starting the 88-91 model GTS/SR5's are front wheel drives and they're referred to as AE92's, meanwhile the older gentration Corolla's up to 87 are rear wheel drives and they're called AE86's...
There's a few differences between the AE92 GTS and SR5, unfortunetly I found out allot of them the hard way!
1. Suspension (Only front is different to support the heavier engine on the GTS)
2. Interior is different (Seats, Gauges, Armrest(ON GTS!!!)
3. Of course the GTS has the engine with the 130Hp called the 4AGE while the SR5 has the same engine on the 4dr. models called 4AFE with 105Hp
4. GTS is dual exhaust to compliment the extra back pressure..
5. GTS comes with the Skirt/wing package and the steel rims.. But my SR5 is gonna have the skirt package next week
That's about it, I think I covered the differences..
Anyways, welcome aboard again..
If you want check out my SR5 at http://www.Geocities.com/ababan1
It looks a bit different now, but not very different...

hey xenon..... some things i did that you might like (or not...).... for the tail lights...buy the red tail-light spray and spray the turn signals....it looks a million better (at least i think so...). also, though the sr-5 didn't come w/ a wing you should put one on.... if you want something different than a basic one (and this includes a body kit for the ae-92) you can find one for our car at:
http://www.bomexaero.com/prdtyae92u.htm
though it's for the jap/euro version, i've seen some US versions with these parts.... (also if you notice, the rear bumper isn't as pointy...that'd be nice to have).... but it looks great, nice paint job....

Thanks for the nice welcome. I have the 4af carbureted engine. You know there kind of seems like there is a dead spot in the carburetor until above 2500 rpm's or so.Do you guys think I need a rebuild, or do they just run that way.Anyway this is a cool web site. I'm glad there are other SR5 owners here to chat with.

yeah my 4-af runs like that to. I have 228000km on the odo. but i know the person that had it before and he always felt that there was no power before 2500 so i guess its a "normal problem"
I got the stock skirs for the GTS off TorontoBud, another buddy on Toyota Nation, unfortunetly he crashed his GTS and he's parting it out, so I bought the stock skirts off him.. I'm going to paint them and install them on my car next week.
Flashmn, I was referring to the EFI models, I totally forgot the carborated models, thanks for the correction..
ToyotaSpeed90, thanks for the link, I'm glad to see that they make skirts and packages for my car, but I like the stock skirts better than a crazy make over..

Us bumpers are different from Euro and japanese ones because of the safety regulations that they have to be 5mph or was it 15mph collision capable, whilst the E and J are merely decorations, theres also other differences with the construction, hence the e and j model weighs only 950kg whilst the US model is over 1200kg. (talking bout ae92 model).
As for the carburetor, yeah its not really potent before the 2.5k mark, but thats when it starts to hit the torque curve, the EFI model isnt THAT potential before that either plus the EFI model has a more peakier powerband. If you want to get rid of the bog, tune the stock carb or get a replacement carb with more adjustments. I'm planning to put twin sidedrafts on mine.
