Hey guys, i'm thinking about taking my 4A-F engine and replacing it with a 4AGE-20v silver top, the question is (1) will it bolt right in are i would to get some mounts made for this replacement.(2) would the 4A-F transmission bolt bolt on to the 20v engine and would i have to change the drive shafts also. I need some info quick.
i'm doing this very thing rite now. from all research i've done, the motor will 100% drop rite in, no custom motor mounts or anything. also, yes, u can use a 4afe tranny including the axles (this is what i'm doing). make sure u have an uncut wiring harness unless your doing a stand alone system. my swap will be done by friday the 30th of this month, i'll be putting a post up discussing all the little obstacles we came across. also, get a blacktop if you can find one. the silvertop is better for boost, but honestly none of the two are that good for boost because of the high compression. and a bonus is alot of the blacktops have 6-speed trannies good luck with whatever u choose to do.
Is it a 4A-FE (EFI) or 4A-FC (Carb)? If it is a 4A-FC, the tranny possibly wont fit.. if your looking for a manual, you need to use a C50, C52 or C56. With the engine, it will bolt straight in, no custom engine mounts needed as it is of the same 'A' block family. You will need a complete harness wheather it is a Carb or EFI, as the 4A-FE is a MAP driven system, and the 4A-GE 20v is a AFM system, so there are alot of other problems that go with it. Also, the FE's the coil is built into the dizzy, the GE's it's not.. I have a 20v in my rolla now tho... am very pleased with it.
There were a few minor logistical problems, but thats a whole different story...

"no custom engine mounts".... this is loosely true..... if the motor you get doesn't have the motor mounts... you can use the 4a-f (e) mounts... however, you need to cut the timing cover for it to work... trust me

why would i need to cut the timing cover? that sounds like madness.

i haven't heard/read anything about cutting the timing belt cover, but that doesn't mean hes wrong, theres so little on the internet about doing a 20v swap into a AE101. i'll let u guys know how it goes.
i'm talking for a smallport.....i'm guessing the other 4ag's are the same..... the bracket on the motor itself that the motor mount bolts up to is different between the 4afe and the 4age.... there are 3 bolts that bolt it up to that bracket...... the 4afe and 4age ones don't line up.... i had to remove the one from the 4age and use the one from the 4afe..... but strangely enough, the one off my 4afe iwas actually beefier, and wouldn't clear the timing cover hole for it..... hence, it had to be cut

Or you could just trim the motor mount down. I cut off the unused holes. Seems to make more sense then cutting the timing cover. Anyways it's an easy fix, and it will be one of the least of the problems.
