92 Corolla overheated, now won't start

Wonder if anyone has had this problem and figured it out?
The 92 Corolla overheated and quit. Towed it home, changed the thermostat, and the radiator cap. BTW, I changed the cap because I saw the overflow was pumping coolant out. The cap also had some hard gunk like dried glue on top of the seal. No hoses blown, no leaks detected anywhere...
Now with new tstat and cap and coolant, all the little booger does is turn over without a hint of ignition. Raw gas smell from exhaust is evident after a few secs of cranking.
Anybody had this happen with a 92 model and the 1.6L motor?

have you checked for spark? if you have spark and you smell fuel... and the timing belt hasn't skipped, then I'd recommend performing a compression test. overheating severely can warp the head and you'll lose compression possibly.

if you overheated it badly enough that it shut itself off.... decent chance you did blow something.... i overheated my old 4a-fe pretty badly, but never bad enough for it to shut off..... i did, however, blow the headgasket

My rad blew and the coolant all leaked out while my wife was driving. When the coolant got too low (empty) the car shut itself off. Towed and replaced the rad. Once the rad was replaced it would not start. The mechanic called and found out that somethng had to be reset in the ignition. Don't know if it was software or a hard ware reset but once he reset it it fired up and she was off. I don't know the specifics cause I was 200 miles away from the car when the rad blew.

It's been so hot and humid in SC this week I've not done anything to the car since putting the tstat and cap in.
I will try the reset, seems logical. If that does'nt work I guess a compression test is next
