Tach

Im thinking about adding a tach to my 98 corolla cause i want to know how high i really am revving it. I have a few questions:
1- Price for JUST the tach and recomendations
2- Installation: Pro or by myself

Did u want it in the cluster or a standalone? If you want it in the cluster, u need to get a whole new cluster, coz the one u have now doesnt have the smarts, although i'm pretty sure the wiring is there..

They arent too hard to install yourself tho.

oh no not in the cluster prob on the (is it called the a-pillar?) but im wondering how much its gonna cost and all

i cant help u with USDM prices.. but i know over here in Oz they can vary greatly... you can pick up a cheap one for around AU$100, or get a good one for around AU$300, plus the guage pod for the a-pillar

it is just a matter of tapping into 1-2 wires, depending on weather or not u run a specific earth or not. There is one for the tach control and one for earth. That is all that is Required. Depending on the wiring, there may be one on the plug for the cluster, or if not, there is one somewhere... Not too sure about the 98's.. my 95 tho there is one in the Diagnosis plug for those that dont have a tach wire in the cluster (most do tho). Best to get your hands on a wiring diagram. These can be found in the Haynes Manual (which is v. handy for alot of other things too)

and yes the conversion rate is about right... but like i said, the prices may not be right for the US Domestic market.

I have a 98 corolla and have done what you want to do...

I bought a tach at Autozone. A small 2 3/4" Sunpro. It came with all the brackets and hardware to mount it to the "A" pillar.

What you do is look at the instructions that come with the tach so that you know which wires on the tach go to which signal.

1. Your "Ground" wire from the tach can be grounded to any metal on the car (make sure it is nice and tight and also touching BARE metal).

2. Your power wire should be connected to a power source that IS NOT a constant. This means attach the power wire to either ciggerette lighter, ignition or something that only emits power when the key is in the "ON" position this way you don't kill your battery when parked.

3. You need to remove the instrument cluster from the dash and connect the wire that has the tachometer signal. Every car has it even if it didn't come with a tachometer stock. It is a black wire on the plug second from the left (If I remember right) Your best bet of how to tap the wire is to pick up a wire splice (also avaliable at autozone.

Ignition wire, NOT the Cigarette lighter, people hook up all their shit in that little inkydinky wire and then wonder why the fuses blow or the car catches on fire. Just put it to the ignition wire.
