Engine light

Hey all just wondering why my 2004 ce corrola light would come on. It only has 42000 and i bought it when it had 36000. Im wondering if its telling me i need to change my oil or im screwed and have to pay lots of money to fix car. There are no noise or weird sounds coming out. when the light turned on I looked at the odometer and it had just hit 6000kms.

what to do.

You can run the code for free at certain auto parts stores.

Try disconnecting the battery for two mintues and see if the engine light goes away. You should be changing your oil every 3-5,000 miles.

I believe that autozone can get you the code as long as it's 96 and newer so you should be okay but when you get the code call the dealer to find out what it means, btw like chris said you should change oil between 3 and 5,000 mi but there is no sensor that would turn the check engine light on because you didn't change your oil.

For all you math whizzes out there, 6000 kms (kilometers) is around 3725 miles, well within acceptable limits for distance traveled between oil changes.
