tire size

I have a 96 Corolla, 1.6 engine, auto trans, a/c and 29,000 miles. We bought it new in 96. Shortly after that I became totally disabled. It is very hard for me to get in the car because its so low to the ground. The original tire size is P175-65-R14's. I want to put on a set of P185-75-R14's , this will raise the car about 1 1/2 inches higher. I checked the dimentions and the larger tires would not rub on any thing. Is this safe to do ? Please help me by giving your thoughts on this. Thanks, Dan from NJ.

Personally, I would not recommend this. I don't think it will rub on anything, but your speedo will be out by quite a bit!

Other than the inch higher centre of gravity, there aren't any safety concerns. Yes, the taller tyre affects the speedometer calibration, but you have to remember that the speedometer is already quite optimistic. Overall, it will only show about 2 mph slower than the car's actual speed at 70 mph.

Actually, you're only going to gain 0.8 inches clearance. You're adding in the difference in diameter. Your speedo will be out by 6.2%

So consider your doing 100mph, your actually doing 106mph which at that speed an extra 6mph is not such a big deal. More realistically doing 50mph, your really going 53 not a big deal. However as somebody also stated earlier, I also believe the speedo is overly optomistic as well since I am pretty sure I timed off mail markers and computed my actual speed a little slower then what the speedo said. I have 175/65/14 on my 2000 CE now and considering 185/65/14 on a new set of rims since my hub caps are looking a little worn. Anybody know if the tire size can be changed in the ECU or something like that? I have heard of transmission places being able to do something like that before, im just not sure on this vehicle.
