My wife bought a 2005 Corolla S about 2 months ago. She did most of the research (she is in outside sales, so she could look around in between appointments) and got a damn good price on the car. However, the dealer told her that ABS was not available for the car. The other night, somehow the subject came up and I decided to look on Toyota's website. Guess what, they list ABS as an option?! Does anybody know if ABS can be added or does it have to be ordered with it from the factory?
Learn how to drive without ABS. Slaming the brake and rely on ABS to save you is bad driving.
You either get it with the car or you don't. It'll cost much more to put it on afterward. All 4 wheel hubs may need to be changed to add ABS sensor. Need ABS brain, sensor, wiring harness, acturator. May even need ABS master brake cylinder. And the list go on.
Dude, as people said ABS will cost you a LOT to put in. You should seriously learn to drive without relying on it, only then will it actually help to have it.
If I were getting a new car I wouldn't really want it even. It's so annoying when you're trying to do something cool in the snow and that shit kicks in.
I have never had ABS on any of my cars until my new car purchase a month ago, so I definitely know how to drive without it. However, it is a nice safety feature for my wife (she drives a lot). I am just more annoyed that the dealer told her that it was not available when it was (per the website). I pretty much figured it could not be added without costng an arm and a leg.
ABS could well save your life. It doesn't matter how good you can drive, in that critical microsecond when a kid or an animal jumps out in front of your car, ABS is a godsend!

Maybe if you showed your women how to drive properly you wouldn't need a $2000 option to make them feel safer. Like everyone said.. stepping on the brakes and hoping ABS will save you is not a good way of driving.. there's more to it than that, avoidance maneuvers, etc. I'm actually thinking myself about taking the BWM driving school course, Its a very good course from what I've heard and they teach how to drive safe in all kinds of bad situations.
Take the course by all means, then try a simple experiment. Get 2 same model Corollas - one with ABS and one without. Find a stretch of road where you can get up to 35 mph (60kms) at a certain spot (not know to the driver) get someone to through a pillow in front of the car (paint a babies face on it). I'll bet my left ball that the Corolla will be able to swerve around the pillow in a controlled motion, while the Corolla without ABS will skid straight over it. I REST MY CASE!!!!!! No driving school in the world could teach you how to save a kid in the same situation as the pillow! Yes you may save your own life as a result of what you learn, but you'll still hit the pillow in the experiment and kill someone in real life. You can not overcome momentum!!!!

Dude.. I drive an 89 AE92 GTS without ABS and I bet you I could swerve around the pillow without even touching your balls.. its all about the car and the driver not the car alone.
Put 2 idiots in both ABS and non ABS Corollas and I bet neither one of them could walk away from this without having to touch your nuts.

It's your wife's car, get her the ABS, (she's a women driver) you want to see her every after work? get her something she'll be able to drive home safely..... and if any argument happens, just take it off
an abs equiped car will out perform an non abs equiped car in emergency situations. no matter how good a driver you are you just can't pump the brakes fast enough to steer and have maximum braking power
