It does make a differenc because my engine use to ping a little taking off in first. not real bad just a bit of a clatter. I thought it was due to the vacum or cetrifugal advance not kicking in right away, but since I put the premium in the tank the clattering has disappeared.

Andrew we all know it's not in your head.. I used to run regular gas and my car used to drive normal, then I started using 92 octane and the car did have a better pick up, and it was actually better...

Ok...on modern cars, changing the fuel WILL in some cases improve response.
The reason for this is because when you use crap gas, the computer would start retarding sparking and whatnot to prevent pinging. This kills the power.
When good gas is used, the computer doesn't have to do anything, and power output is optimum.
From the computer's standpoint, is make sure granny's favourite car runs and keeps quiet. The computer is programmed not to care for granny's teenager grandson's driving.

But I don't see how crap gas makes a car respond better, but I'm pretty sure that crap gas has more tendency to be like diesel, it can ignite at lower temperatures...which can cause ping, which causes the computers to go crazy.

um, from what i've noticed, the higher octane the better my car runs (daily i use 89 octane, not premium and not regular).... when i go to the track i 1) change intake filter, 2) use premium, 3) add octane booster... the higher the octane, the cleaner the gas actually is (which is why it costs more), which means it will burn cleaner... on some cars you are told to use premium because of this (like the integra GSR and civic SI, on the dash you can see "PREMIUM ONLY&quot.... so, you decide for yourself.... but i'm going to keep doing what i do when it comes to gas.....

so in a rotary, why is it better to use normal pump 89 octane, and actually achieve higher performance than running on higher octane?

my RX-7 nut said some jap tuner actually achieved a higher output with lower grade gasoline than with a higher octane..
f00ked up man.

i dunno.... prob has something to do with the fact that a rotary engine is TOTALLY different than a 4/6/8+ cylinder engine

Actually, on most modern cars, the ECU prevents your engine from taking advantage of a higher octane fuel unless[ it has been configured to do so. Last year Road & Track did a test, and cars which were set for 87 octane showed no improvement with anything up to 94 octane. In fact, one of the cars actually showed a slight decrease in power, but they chalked that up to a testing anomaly.

Cars which were optimized for higher octane fuels did run better with higher octanes.

well, how old were the cars they were using? b/c after time an engine builds crap up in it, and if you run a cleaner gas it can help burn some of that crap (or at least have it accumulate way less).... so in that manner it's better..... i mean, come on.... it's gotta be better to use cleaner gas for a 120,000 mile/13 year old car!!!

the gas is not neccessarily cleaner, rather than PURER octane.

it won't clean out the carbon deposits left by incomplete combustion.

the reason why most cars (like the si, gsr and type r) need premium is to prevent detonation. Higher compression = higher octane levels. IT has nothing to do with the cleanliness of gas. In fact, all gas should be used what its really for, that is to CLEAN. leave the powering to methanol.
