mine has 264k miles on it. if taken care of, an ae86 will outlast whatever your mom is driving, unless its a toyota

that seems insane he wants that much for it. is it a show car? does it have some engine in it other than an n/a 4age?

first thing, look for leaks of any kind. test drive it, and look it over very well for rust in the trunk, rear quarter panels, and floorboards.

do a search on this site and see what other people have had go wrong on their cars and if you see any recurring trends with ae86's

i have had no problems with mine except a cheap battery exploding, a leaky power steering rack, leaking brake calipers, and i had to put a clutch in it.

i think u should really not spend ur money on an ae86.....don't buy into the hype unless ur prepared to deal with a car that is almost as old as you are.....as with any car.....mechanical parts do detoriate over time and need to get repaired or replaced.....

and stop watching Initial D......

For a 20 year old car you might have some problems cuz of it's age. Some common problems usually occur:
-fuel pump
-water pump
-alternator
-headgasket
-leaks (vaccum,oil, coolant, etc)
Try to replace everything in the engine, to make the car run like a new car.
As long as you maintain it well it should be runnin' fine.

here in canada....the engine isn't really the issue..its more so the body.....damn winters..too much snow and salt....my car ran great up until 280 km...it was the body that rusted out and killed her....

Things to look for:
1)visually look at the engine bay and everything in it look for cracks, leaks anything unusual make a mental note and ask seller about it but common sense can filter bull***t explanations
2)check the body around door jams, rocker panels, and floor pans places where there is alot of stress on the body, knocking on them works well, and if you hear a hollow plastic sound make note of it and tell seller(knock couple hundred off)
3)if you can, get under the car for a better look for leaks i.e. transmission, differential, oil pan also inspect moving parts anything thats under there that you can look at or touch do it.
4)run the car listen to it for squeaks, hisses, loping, pinging, or rubbing, etc.
5)do a compression check, this along with visual inspection and having the engine run and any other test will give you a pretty good idea of what shape the car and engine is in.

Most of all be comfortable with the car and make sure it fits you well cause youre gonna spend lotta time and money with it so make sure its what you want, plus you dont want your mom to bitch at you when the car breaks down and you have to borrow her car all the time.

7grand for any ae86 is pretty ridiculous. Honestly, if you're really worried about reliability, you might want to jump a few years and get an ae92.

wow thanks for all the help

okay, here's the latest news on the 86

we went on a test drive, (he was driving), and it was alright, pretty smooth plus loud. he dropped the price down to $5700

while we were talking, he says he gave the car a $400 paint job (its uber white, exactly like tak's), got it a rebuilt engine (still 4ag-e), and replaced the brake pads plus brake wire, or something. the lingo was kinda off.

hmm what else.. the hatch had a little rust on the INSIDE roof area, doesnt look too bad... rims are black... and he replaced his american bumper with the japanese ones.

sound like 5700 to you guys?

thanks.

That still sounds like a lot to me. Especially for a cheap paint job and rebuilt engine. If he painted it white, he's probably trying to sell it to some initial d sucker that thinks its a gem. Unless he's got $3000 wheels on it, I'd walk away. But that's just me... its your decision.
