after engine swap; legal questions

i searched on the dmv's website and it says i gotta... "give notice to the department upon a form furnished by it containing a description of the motor vehicle engine or motor installed, including any identifying number thereon and the date of the installation. The owner of the motor vehicle shall also submit to the department with the notice the certificate of ownership and registration card covering the motor vehicle in which the motor vehicle engine or motor is installed and evidence of ownership covering the new or used motor vehicle engine or motor installed and such other documents as may be required by the department" within 10 days of completion or something like that.

so in plain english... i need to give the dmv...
1. a discription of the engine in 10 days (from me or a mechanic?)
... and thats all i got.

what's the legal process after doing an engine swap on a car from the moment you're done swapping -> smog?

i'm in california by the way

It also depends entirely on the engine. You cannot legally swap and BAR ref a non-USDM engine or an engine that was not ever sold in a car in the United States. The engine being swapped must have all smog equipment (EGR, etc...) and must pass smog and meet with CA requirements. ALL of the factory wiring and ECU must be used. The BAR refs actually print out a wiring diagram and follow it to make sure it's all there. Must use all original OEM spec equipment (no intakes and stuff). Engine must be from a newer car, or one of the same year. That's the only real LEGAL way to legalize a swapped car in CA.

The easy way... pay a smog shop under the table and have them overlook the visual inspection part. You better pass tailpipe though...

I am doing a sr5->gts conversion just like what you did. The thing with mine is that i only intend to swap enough to make the car run/smog (that means no air conditioning, power steering, etc).

So according to this haynes repair manual i have, the emissions control system of a usdm 4age, would be the EGR sys, and EVAP sys? ... and when you say all of the factory wiring you mean all that is necessary for it to run/pass smog? the BAR refs aren't supposed to get on your case about "uninstalled" luxuries like air conditioning and such right?

these haynes repair manuals seem too simplified...
