Just bought an 89 SR5

Hi all,

Hope to be spending alot of time here. 15 year old car 98,000 km (Canadian).

Not a very good start though, out of town and this morning battery just blew up. Hosed the engine down with baking soda and water, and the alternater seemed to die. Well after the sun hit it worked no problem.

I cleaned the engine and surroundings the best I could, hopeing all the acids were cleaned and off the paint.

This car has potential, but having a limited budget, my question is this...first on the list of mods

What do you guys think would make a little more sense, just for a tiny bit of an edge, not just bare stock.

First on the list of mods...

-Exhaust
or
-K&N Filter
?

Matt

Its hard to say which will be more effective. If your filter is black and full of garbage, you'll notice a difference if you replace it. Same goes for your muffler or cat. If both are in good condition I'm gonna take a wild guess and say a mandrel bent catback system would be best.

98000 kms?

98,000kms that's Canadian, don't know what it would be in miles, lol.

After the filter and exhaust comes the new carb....

Do you think there'a a turbo?

Exhaust and K&N filter is about as much as you're gonna find for that SR5, you could go with aftermarket carbs if you got a carbed 4AF if you got the 4AFE (fuel injected) then you could make your own intake like Ahmed (Xenon) did. You could do suspension (struts and springs) but being an SR5 the suspension is a little on the soft side, had you got a GTS you would have better suspension and motor to start with. the 4AGE motor on the GTS has more parts available than the 4AFE (even though sometimes it seems like there's nothing out there ) but everything comes with a price.

I hope you didn't buy the car thinking you were gonna find "bolt on everything" like you do with Hondas, because then you bought the car for the wrong reason... or you bought the wrong car.

As for an SR5 having potential.. I rather not say anything in case other SR5 owners out there are reading.

I know what an SR5 is.. beats 99 and up civics and neons?? obviously whoever sold you the car used that as an excuse.. at 90hp, you will barely keep up with civics and neons.

Then you have a GTS not an SR5.

here's the engine breakdown.

4AF = 90hp
4AFE = 100hp
4AGE(bigport) = 120hp
4AGE(smallport) = 130hp

now read the engine code on your motor and you can figure out what hp you got.

thanks man, helped alot. The dealership told me an sR5, but there was no indication.

Makes more sense now, suspenion is too good.

Listen, I went from 89 stang (14 second car with mods).

SR5 or GTS, how can I tell? Seriously.

well.. for starters only the GTS came with the 4AGE motor on them.. here's a pic of the engine bay on a GTS, which comes with the strutbar.

and here's what an SR5 came with.

which one looks like yours?

unfortunatly, SR5....but with Twin Cam on it, and blue wires and a racingfilter cover (remember when you could just undo the wing nut and turn your filter upside down)...well, first stab at jap....always thought it was crap....hopeless or what? I have the time and money progessivly...even bother? they look nice done, not ricey....

hmmm... an SR5 with Twin cam on it? SR5's did not come with 4AGE's on them.. why don't you just take some pics of your car.. cuz SR5's and GTS's are totally different, interior and exterior wise. the GTS had sport seats, Tachometer, side skirts, and alloy wheels the SR5's came with steelies and no tachometer.. and you could also get them in automatic while the GTS was only available as 5speed.
