4AC carb rebuild?

I have a problem with my 86 4AC where at a certain position of the gas pedal, it feels like a large fuel cut to the engine. I've been asking around auto parts stores and most of them told me that I need a carburetor rebuild. What do you guys think it is? I'll trust the information coming from here much more than the autoparts stores cuz yea...this is Toyota land of the net and those stores are used to seeing riced neons and foci. If it is a carb rebuild, do you recommend making it a DIY projec t or have a carb specialist do it? Thank you all for your time and patience.

you should be able to get a rebuilt carb from napa or car quest. when you accelerate does the car seem to bog down then continue accelerating? if that is the case your accelerator pump diaphragm may need replacing. you can usually get carb rebuild kits from most auto parts stores.

yea, it feels like it's dying, then if i push the gas a lil bit further, it takes off. So I can only drive in eithe low rev or high rev, no medium. if it's only the diaphragm, so you still recommend getting a rebuilt carb? are there symptoms that will tell me it's specifically the diaphragm? thanks again

my '87 sr5 had the same symptoms and i replaced the accelerator pump diaphragm and it cured it. your carb amy have more problems than the accel. pump diaphragm so i would recommend replacing just that and seeing if that helps. they are pretty cheap (about $5) and are pretty easily installed. i got mine from napa. if replacing it doesnt help, i would suggest replacing the entire carb or taking it somewhere and having it professionally rebuilt.

I rebuilt the carb, it took about 12 hours total over 3 days. It ran a little better, but no change in the problem. Yesterday, I changed the whole exhaust from the tail pipe to the exhaust manifold not including the manifold. Now it runs like normal. Thanx for all the info tho.

sounds like the acceleratorpump diaphragm.
