noises under the hood

I recently hear knocking (metal to metal) noise specifically on the left side of my front end (drivers side). I hear this noise when driving slow on a rough road or bumps, at high speed you will not hear the noise even if I hit a bump or a rough. I have checked my front wheels by turning it side ways (push/pull) and I noticed there is a small play. The play is more noticeable on the left wheel. What could be the possible problem? I am not a good mechanic and just want to have some ideas on what the problem is before I can take it to the shop, in this way they cannot fool me on what the problem is. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
