Does anyone know the hp & torque rating of the 1.6 DOHC and 1.8 SOHC engines? I've got a 1.8l 7afe that blows oil at a rate of a little more than a litre per tank of fuel so I'm thinking of replacing it or rebuilding it. The 7afe seems hard to comeby so I'm thinking a 4age would probably work. A 7age would be the most fun but I haven't found one. If I go the rebuild route I suppose I could turn my 7afe into a 7age.
What's the difference between a silver top and a black top? Besides the colour.

Which 4age are you talking about first off? The Smallport, silvertop or the Blacktop? As for fun factor, the 4A-GE is much more fun as it revs higher and has more power.
There are a few differences between the ST and BT: The first and most obvious is the fact that the ST is AFM and the BT is MAP controlled. The other major difference is that the ST is only VVT, whilst the BT has VVT-i. The other subtle differences include: the ST has stronger (heavier) internals, the BT revs higher than the ST and the BT generally comes with the 6-speed C56 Gearbox. The BT also has higher compression (11:1 as opposed to the 10.5:1 in the ST)
If your looking for the fun-factor 'out of the box', go with the supercharged 4A-GZE though.
*edit* FYI: All are DOHC, roughly with the 'Hemi style' design. All of the 4A-GE heads are made by Yamaha too.

if you have an AE101 wagon... go with the 7AGE or rebuild the 7AFE. you need more torque hauling a heavier car. but if you wanna go crazy go with a 4AGZE!

I'm not looking for a huge power gain. I just want to have at least what I have now. It is in a '95 Corolla Wagon. It does not have amazing power but it is good enough for for my wife. I know that shorter stroke will decrease the torque but will the performance head in a 4age make up for the loss? I don't want to pour a pile of money into this and don't have a spare car so I'm somewhat limited to buying an engine, dropping it in and driving away.

So you guys prefer the 4agze to super high rev fun of a 20 valve 4age? I'm one of those guys that doesn't care too much about high power numbers anymore, just which engine is more fun toss around! Sorry if this is off topic

then just get your motor rebuild! at least this way you know you're getting a fresh motor, just my opinion!

depends on what car you have. i personally like the 20V, i get good gas mileage and when i need to rev for spirited driving i have some power. FI motors on the other hand is too expensive for me to maintain as i'm limited on budget.

Don't get a 4AGE if you want driveable every day sensible power.. Cuz you won't get power out of a 4AGE unless you rev high.. doing mods to a 4AGE gives you power high in the RPM band. So if you go 4AGE and want power you need to rev high.. put that together with a good sounding exhaust system and.. hmmm
As for the 7AFE, I have one in my '89 corolla SR5 coupe.. it's a nice engine. You can find them in 93-96 corolla's. Those corolla's also came with the 4AFE in them. Just look on the distributor and there should be a sticker that says 7AFE or 4AFE.. Also. you could just look at the sticker on the under side of the hood, if the engine is still in the car. There are other things that you can look at on the engine to determine.
i think you should just rebuild it. no mod since its a family car
i do have an 7AFE with a CAI in my '93 and i like it alot
planing on adding a turbo one day, maybe next spring
all customs, expensive, but yeah worth it

The man just wants his wagon to run like it used to again.. he doesn't want no crazy engine rebuild or swap.. how hard is that to understand??
I'd say either rebuild your current 7AFE or find an engine seller and get yourself another 7AFE. There's a few in the Toronto area, but I'm not sure where you are so I can't really name any names. I have also seen some places in Ottawa and Montreal, and I don't doubt there's any nearby where you live. So get your yellow pages out and look for some engine sellers' numbers.
For daily driving the 4A-GE will not pull your car and a 4A-GZE is just that much less reliable because of its supercharger.
??? my 4age "pulls" my car quite fine and is reliable...... there's still a lot of the supercharged mr2's driving around, and those haven't come out in over 15 years

I actually prefer the 20v myself, but for 'out of the box' performance, like i said, the 4A-GZE feels more powerful because it is so damn tourqey. I just like the high-revving and aggressive, yet well flowing and economical power of the 20v
