I hate to say it, but out of the 2 I'd take the Mazda. My sister and brother in law have a sport hatch and I love it.

You'll be sorry with the Mazda.

First off...it's a Ford in Japanese clothing. Sure it looks sharp inside and out...but I question it's staying power for reliabiltiy and resale value.

Second...industry scoop is that they are having build quality issues (hence supporting my first point).

Third, good luck getting service from your Mazda dealer. It's all find and dandy that they're selling Mazda3's like crazy...but with the big jump in sales they haven't ensured that their dealer network can support and service all these new vehicles on the road. Nissan's in the same boat too. Their little rinky-dink dealers will not be able to keep up with your demand for warranty repairs and service. (ie: You wait for parts. You wait for service. You just plain wait).

Toyota has managed it's sales and dealer growth in a steady upward fashion.

But then again...you're asking which is better at a Toyota enthusiast site.

Mazda - Ford Focus engine and chasis. Need I say more.
Corolla - The Lexus of it's class. The most well put together car in it's class.

Mazda 3 has some advantage in horsepower, but Corolla XRS is much more intense, aggressive and performance driven than the 3.

Let my stat by saying that i freaking hate IGNORANT people !!!!

FAAAAAWK !!!!

Fist off .... the only FORD with Mazda badges is the mid 90s to present Mazda B-Series ( before that all the B-Series were Mazda Trucks and the B2000 truck was appraised to be the most reliablwe truck ever made ).

Second of all FORD bought shares ( 17% and today they have 33% ) into Mazda in the 70s because they could not / did not build any good FWD cars .... FORD went on and just used Mazda engines and chasis.

Ford Probe = Mazda MX-6

Ford Festiva / Aspire = Mazda 121 ( rated as the most reliable car in the world in 2000 beating the Toyota Camry )

Ford Capri = Mazda 323 GT Turbo from the 80s

Ford Escort = Mazda Protege ( early 80s / early 90s ) very reliable cars becasue of the BP motor in them ( turbo block with individual oil squirters webbed reinforcement ... looks a lot like the Ford Cosworth block and it can take a lot of boost .... 400whp Miatas and Proteges with STOCK internals running 10s on the 1320 )

Ford Telsar = Mazda 626 ( NA and Turbo 2.2L & 2.0L ... the last generation MX-6 and 626 that were sold in Europe had the FE3 motor 2.0L that produced 260hp in the 80s )

and that is just to name a few .... there were tons more cars oversees that were sold as Fords but with Mazda hardware underneath

Mazda had nothing to do with the Cougar, Taurus, Tempo, Crown Victoria and their van and truck line up.

I don't know where you are getting your scoops from ... but it smells like god poop. Mazda has always had

All the new cars are exeptionally built and i don't know where you are getting all this BS from ... the major thing that the Mazda 3 has issues with was the SRS light turning on the dash because of a sensor and that was all recalled and fixed by replacing the 5$ part.

Toyota makes some reliable cars but they still need to learn how to build fun cars .... and Mazda has been the #1 Japanese car company when it comes to driver inspiration and exiliration. No one builds little econo boxes that handle and feel like a Mazda. " IT JUST FEELS RIGHT "

Mazda is also the most innovative Japanese car maker .... no one dares bring out the things Mazda does .... and that is why Mazda owners are a special breed .... they are people that want something different something better than just the average car.

- Mazda embraced the rotary technology in the 60s and continues to this day to provide RX products ( R-100, Cosmo, RX-2, 3,4,5,6,7,9 )

- Mazda was one of the first to inroduced the 4WS system ( 626, MX-6, 929 )

- Mazda put a turbo and 4WD on their bread-and-butter cars ( 323 and 626 ) since the early 80s .... GTX and GT models.

- Mazda was first to introduce a factory GPS unit ( 1989 Mazda Cosmo )

- Mazda was the first to introduce a sorround sound stereo system in a car ( 1989 Cosmo ) and also a car computer control system ( touch screen, single point interface for all functions )

- Mazda also had the first production Twin Turbo system ( 1989 Cosmo )

- Mazda used a Miller Cycle engine in their Mazda Millenia

Toyota cars are fine .... just not fun. When did Toyota ever have a 4WD Turbo Corolla or Camry in North America ? Mazda had Turbo 323 and 626 since late 70s.

I drove the new Corolla .... BORRRING car ... too much engine and road noise and the power band on the car leaves a lot to be desired ... and i even drove the 170hp model .... and it does not feel like the Mazda 3.

True.

I don't know where you get this info from ... but the Auto Industry and Magazines are prasing Mazdas like they are Jesus Christ.

Car and Drive for example has been doing comparison tests ever since they have been in existance and i have a collection of bunch of issues where they are comparing the compact class of cars ( Civic, Corolla, Protege .. etc ) and guess what ... since the 80s till today Mazda came on top in comparisons:

-1989 Car and Driver champ = Mazda Protege ( 1st generation )

-1995 Car and Driver champ = Mazda Protege ( 2nd generation )

-1998 Car and Driver champ = Mazda Protege ( 3rd generation )

-2000 Car and Driver champ = Mazda Protege

-2001 Car and Driver champ = Mazda Protege Mazdaspeed ( i don't belive Toyota even had an entry in the compact performance class )

-2004 Car and Driver champ = Mazda 3 ( 4th generation )

The interior look and feel of the car is on par with the German cars ... remove the badges and some euro loyalists would confuse it for a new AUDI or VW.

Left in the dust would mean ... you beat him by a lot, real life stats prove otherwise .... you were slowly pulling away and that would make you guys both breath the same dust both of you were kicking up.

COROLLA XRS
0-100: 20.00 sec.
0-60: 7.30 sec.
1/4mi: 15.90 sec.
70-0: 176.00 ft.
Skidpad: 0.82 g.
Speed: 130.00 mph

MAZDA3
0-100: 21.80 sec.
0-60: 7.77sec
0-70: 10.70 sec.
1/4mi: 16.13@90
Skidpad: 0.84 g.

We all know what would happen if you raced the older Mazdaspeed Protege and ...

Just a little note ..... Mazda has a Mazdaspeed version of the Mazda3 on the way this next year that will share the same 4WD system and Turbo 2.3L ( 256hp ) as the European spec Mazda6 MPS.

Funny. You didn't contest my comment about dealer support. Guess that's right eh? ;D I still feel sorry for anyone who buys a Mazda because they're going to have to wait for space.

I agree...they are impressively styled and that's why they're winning awards (though not necessarily quality awards).
If you work for Mazda, go ask their QA people for component repair info - then get back to me. No god complex here...but it is an assessment from someone who has access to these QA statistics - which few people have.

You disagree, great - attack the arguments on their premise (which you did nicely I might add). Leave the ad-hominum attacks out. You don't see me calling you or anyone else "ignorant" do you??

Hmmm ... no i just had better stuff to talk about in the previous posts .... like about the actual cars instead of the dealers.

If you were smart enough and picked up a recent Consumer Reports ( the largest automotive reporting ogranization ) and looked up dealer satisfaction .... Mazda right up there with Honda, Toyota, Nissan.

And in Europe ( because they are under differnt Management there ) Mazda came on top in dealership satisfaction for like past 4 years in a row ..... this is annal Germany we talking about.

And in Japan is have no idea how they do and again they have different management there than they do in Europe and North America.

And considering that Mazda is the 5th largest Japanese car it is a considerable feat.

I work in the automotive part checking fixture industry and i deal with customers who build parts for car manifacturers and i deal with CAD departments, QA departments, Manifacturing ... and i do not know how one would go about collecting info from part to part to make a conclusion on how good the outcome of the car will be. We do work for the big thress and for all the Japanese manifacturers and we ( the industry ) uses the same quality standarts .... but somehow all the American cars are exponentially lower in quality.

Than again i am going to ask you to pass by a magazine stand and flip through Consumer Reports and see what they have to say. I do not have any statistics on hand ... but i will later one ( to prove a point )

In my books anyone who tells me and others that ... MAZDA is a FORD is ignorrant. I understand if it came from somone working at McDonalds or was not a car enthusiast. But you don't seem to be in that category.

MAZDA built cars and FORD flipped badges on them ... and that is what made Ford a more reliable brand starting with late 70s till mid 90s.

FORD without MAZDA = GM

OK .. understood, but what would you call a person that claimed that Honda was just a rebadged Satun ???

The Saturn SUV uses the Honda 3.5L V6 .... so how does one come to the conclusion that Hondas are rebaged Satunrs ???

That is exactlly what my problem was with the staetment about Mazda being a rebadged Ford.

And this myth has spread around and i hear it way too often .... and those people are simply missinformed ( to refrain from using "ignorrant" )

P.S. I have a better anology ... how about if someone said that Toyotas are shit because they are rebaged GM Cvaliers ?

They are sold as Toyota Cavaliers in Japan ...

To the original poster, why not get a used celica gts (maybe 30-40,000 miles). You can leave those mazda3's in the dust all day. Gotta love the 6speed, hey mazda3 where's your six. Ya, could wait for mazda3 speed. All I have to say is Yamaha!!!
