Question EGR part

Need some help on this. I have read everything I can for the last few days, but cannot really find the answer.

I have an 85 Corolla GTS that has failed CA Smog twice due to high NOx. As far as I can put together with all the reading it is the EGR. Question is, do I need to replace the whole unit? The vacuum was tested and it's fine. Cat was changed as well, but I am still doubling the Max for this car.

Any help extremely appreciated.

theman86_2,

I wasn't really sure if it was a part that was comprised of different pieces. The cheapskate in me I guess :p. I was afraid you would say that though. That will be what I will be doing then.

Thanks!

200 for an EGR sounds cheap. Where can I find an EGR that cheap? I've checked places like Checker & Autozone & they've both quoted me prices set between $250-320 USD.

Any chance anyone can point me to a trustful place on the net that can sell one to me for a low price?

We would be lucky to find it at those places right away. Sounds like a special order item even at the dealership in my area. Kragen would not even order it anymore. I may just have to clean the thing.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, too, except I don't have an air compressor to use. I've no friends available around these parts, either, that could help me out.

How are you thinking about cleaning the thing out?

It was suggested to use a bike brake cable or something close to it and attach it to a drill and go at it. My car is at my friends shop too so he may have another way of doing this. I'll let you know what we come up with.

Anyone else out there ever cleaned out their EGR valves? I noticed a lot of people like to disable it, but anyone fix it before?

Well, we got it fixed. Dropped NOx by over 1/2. I passed! You will need to take it out because it would be hell if you tried to do it while it is in there. We didn't use the brake line like I said earlier, but we used small screw drivers, brake cleaner and an air compressor.

You could also try to use a metal hanger since that is small enough to clean it out. Actually very easy, but alot of poking and proding.

Yea kragen and autozone don't sell the egr valve i needed for my 90 tercel and it was the dealer who charged me 187 w/ tax and 118 for the temperature sensor i figured i would replace them both so it doesn't happen again
