idling noise

Hi all, just stumbled upon this excellent site! I feel ashamed of the way I have been taking care of my rolla, but am determined after reading the post here, that i wanna keepmy rolla for long and take due care!

I have a 95 corolla, done 165k miles. only maintenance i have done (after a service at 90k) is oil changes and tires! so i realize a lot needs to be done. In the meantime, (at 120K) took the car in for a grinding noise and was told it was a transmission problem! The differential was off and the guy milked me 2500$. Late I realized the noise disappeared after i changed wheels!!!

Now, my car idle noise is louder than when engaged and i can hear all the gears change as i pick up speed- which i never did before the transmission job. will changing timing belts etc, make this better?
Thanks

no timing belts would have nothing to do with your gears grinding. Does it always make the sound or only in turns and shifting gears?
