I got a chance to take a 2001, 5 spd rolla out and I was pleasantly surprised!!
I wasn't convinced that VVT-i was gonna make that much difference. The car has strong, very smooth acceleration with lots at the bottom-end!! It was completely stock, so I wonder how much bottom would be lost putting on the regular aftermarket goodies like intake and exhaust!? But then it would just smoke in the upper rev range.
I know there isn't alot of the 98+ rollas in here, but if you haven't tested driven the 2001 Corolla, I suggest you do.

it is definately peppy.. quick, responsive.. for sure..

but damn it... toyota has completly lost the boat on handling on that gen of corollas.. has very minimal driver feed back, prob more body roll than a barrel.. understeers like the titanic........

its a fun car to mess around in.. drifting can be done in quite a civilized fashion as oversteer can be coaxed with the hand brake or a quick release of the gas...

not too bad....... but still waiting for one a little more sleek w/ 2 drs...
