SR5 do indeed qualify as the AE86... if it is between 1985 and 1987, it is AE86. But the SR5 has a less powerful engine than the GT-S. It has a 4A-FE, instead of 4A-GE.
Yup, the SR5 also has the AE86 code. But there are some visual differences between the SR5 and GT-S. One major one is the bumpers. But when you look at what the car actually has in it they are really different. They have a different engine, tranny, rear axle, and suspension. In almost every where but Canada for some strange reason the GT-S also came with a LSD.

I also heard that in the vin number the last dig has to have a 3 or a 5 to be LSD
There is a AE85 but not over here in North America. A lot of people like to call the SR5 a AE85 or AE85.5 because it is different perfomance wise in comparison to the GT-S. Over here they are all AE86's.
north american saftey standards required the beefier ae86 chassis, thus whether be it sr5 or gts, it comes in the ae86 chassis platform, not ae85. to tell the diff between an actual sr5 or gts in canada's simple. sr5's start with 'jt2ae86....' and gts's all start with 'jt2ae88....' so if your car is a gts but starts with jt2ae86, then it is most likely a sr5 to gts conversion. the sr5 ae86 we got here have the 4ac sohc carb engine (power, unknown) while the gts in NA is a 114 hp dohc efi 4age afm version (jap spec incorporated map and was 128hp)
if you want to buy an "ae86" its better to get a gt-s in the first place..
if you wnat to convert an sr5 to gt-s spec, here's what you'd have to do:
engine swap
change fuel lines, pump and tank (maybe tank.. i forget)
rear axles, rear brakes, differential, drive shaft (maybe drive shaft, again, I forget)
springs on gt-s are stiffer (might has different shocks/struts too)
gt-s has bigger sway bar
probably some other stuff i'm forgetting..
and cosmetics like interior, side trim, etc..
so yeah, its a big job
also, don't bother trying to read all these axle codes, the LSD option was never available in Canada..

sorry randy! but i gotta say it! the difference between in suspension comparing the late gen GTI 1.8T and my previous blue sr5 is, i kicked his ass outta a highway off ramp (180 degrees, 404N, exit 16ave)
i find not all gts and sr5's same. some have better suspension (cause who know's how many times the shocks been replaced) and some handle like crap. i had an sr5 that handled better than one of my GTS's IMO. tire, shock, spring, bushings, all matter though
